Comparing bar path at different weights; As the weight gets heavier, I tend to disengage the lats more, which cause a bigger arch of the bar path and me jumping forward trying to catch under!

Stretching.

This banded stretch stretches out your hip flexors. I really like band assisted stretching and the idea is that you get the band right up into your hip and make sure there is a lot of tension on the band pulling your hip forward.

Also, you must ensure you’re tensing the glute of the leg with the band round it. This squares the pelvis and makes sure you’re actualy getting a useful stretch rather than something out of position and not worth doing.

The benefit of a band is that it adds a level of distraction (pull) onto the joint that is difficult to achieve otherwise. Hold this for 2 minutes and then retest it, you should see a difference in your hip extension.

What are you actually doing when you’re stretching though? Stretching the muscle fibres? Stretching out the tendons? Honestly... you’re not making any tissues longer, it’s just not happening.

What does happen is this form of stretching inhibits something in your muscle that makes it contract to a certain length. Once you inhibit that thing, it tells your muscle spindles to relax a bit more, coming out of their contraction and therefore gaining more range of movement, but we are not making any tissues longer by stretching. Doing this over time will compound the relaxed effect though.

There’s a lot of hating going on about static stretching pre workout. I don’t buy it. For me, static stretching will always be part of my warm up routine because I know, 100%, that I move in better positions once I have stretched statically. I can literally see the difference. If you’re really worried about ‘reducing your force output’ then just do static stretching first, then dynamic... problem solved!

Pic 2: Today, after doing the exercise I prescribed for about 3 weeks pretty much every day. It’s got a little bit further to go, but what a great improvement! Sarah’s pain has also basically gone.

Just goes to show that if you stick with something, you can actually make change with injuries and dysfunction.

It’s only from one exercise too, working on engaging the proper muscles in a basic movement pattern focusing on CONTROL. No therabands, no stretches, no massage.

Those things can help, but with a joint like the shoulder functional, controlled rehab is better in my experience.

Advise: For new gym users that don't how to bench or have an idea, well I can tell you now that it is far more complicated than you thought! When setting up in the bench press, your shoulder blades (scapulas) must be squeezed together and pulled down by the activation of your lats. This set up will become your foundation to drive and will allow the weight (kg) to become more evenly distributed across the torso. Breathing is the biggest assat to any type of lifting! Before taking the bar out of the rack, take in a sharp breath and immediately lift away! when the bar decends towards under your chest or sternum, do not release that breath. Once the bar has made contact with your torso breath out with control and pressing the bar upwards.

Ankle mobility is 🔑

By far the most limiting factor I see when people squat is their ankes. If you lack sufficient dorsiflexion (the ability for the toes to go towards the shin) then you will struggle to squat to depth.

If you lack that, your knee won’t be able to travel forward so it’s in line/just over your toes. When this happens you won’t be able to lower your hips into a squat position without hunching your upper body forward and rounding your lower back, which is a big compensation.

There are a lot of stretches and techniques that can help you to regain that range of movement and this is one; the banded ankle stretch on a box.

Set yourself up like I have and lean forwards, trying to push on the top of your quad so your knee travels further forward whilst keeping your heel on the box. The band will help to pull on the structures in the back of your ankle and allow for a more effective mobilisation.

Remember what you’re doing when you’re stretching though. You aren’t making any muscles longer, you’re just ‘tricking’ the thing responsible for making the muscle stick to a certain length. Long term stretching compounds this effect and gets the muscle to ‘relax’ into the new length more permanently.

Good vs Bad **(90% of people I see squatting do this incorrectly which almost always means they are hyperextending during deadlifts as well)
Both set-Ups are locked in tight, Bracing with the core, ribs tight, Glutes tight. But as soon as you break at the hips and knees people have this tendency to flare the tailbone out because of poor queuing, muscle imbalances (bad motor patterns) and improper bracing of the core.
