I am always yelling at Mal about her "pre jerk"ritual of taking a deep breath in, rising her shoulders and sort of moving/bouncing into the dip/drive phase of the jerk. Notice the little swing up and forward before each jerk (it's small), but this at higher loads becomes an issue of pulling oneself out of position and allowing ones enter of mass to drift out of alignment, meaning all jerk paths will be forward and one will miss the load forward even though the actual bar path looks very nice overall. This little pre jerk thingy can be fixed by slowing down and setting up with more diligence and purpose. Me thinks this all makes sense and I hope you can see what I am talking about. Before and after, about 20 minutes apart. In a squat, the bar should always track above the arch of the foot. In the first photo, you can see how that the bar is several inches too far forward, but we did a calf-inhibition exercise from PRI and I gave him external feedback, having him get his knee forward to touch my hand. My first time front squatting! Low bar back squat max is 270lbs, so I was just feeling these out, getting used to form. Form shit the bed on the last 3 reps, ESPECIALLY rep #10. Need to up this conditioning.. Plan was 4x4-6 @ RPE 8, decided to do 3x5 then an AMRAP of 10 (cardio, ouch). So....I guess my current Front Squat PR is 135lbs x 10!

This grouping makes me so 😁, especially since I haven't been able to squat for quite some time. Of course the weight is fairly light for me, but I want to make sure I am rebuilding correctly and not just bouncing weight back up. A strict, tight packed, and nearly vertical #barpath is important for me.

Set of 5 at 325 from about a month ago, my last visit to Summit Training Center. Felt like this weight moved extremely well. Deload week incoming then top sets, we’ll see if I can best my 335x3 I did the same day as this.

After working this morning, I decided to do a lunch time session.
Building up squats to a 3 rep max.
Then finishing off squats with a max set of 100kg at 11 reps.
Hitting this with a calorie deficit wasn’t ideal, but I had to get in there and get it done ✅

How far your hips come back will be determined by #barplacement and femur length. And your #backangle with determined by the same. Don't let someone tell you that you have to keep an upright torso through the #exercise.

Also note the #barpath, it continuously stays over the middle of the foot. Where you going to be the most balanced and most #powerful.

I've been focusing a lot on my hip mobility and moving correctly. Becoming more functional with my mechanics has definitely helped me put on some size in my hamstrings and glutes.

A few things I do pre-leg day:

1.) Making sure my hip flexors/quads are released. Sitting all day long causes your hip flexors to tighten up and since I sit in a car all day that's my #1 issue. Focus on stretching and rolling out your quads/hip flexors pre-lift.
2.) Making sure my hamstrings, adductors, and glutes are warmed up and ready to move. I started doing Sling Shot band squats as a warm up along with hamstring curls and it has done WONDERS for my form.
3.) Warming up my core with a few of my favorite abdominal exercises.
4.) Feuling my work outs with proper nutrition. Eat right!!! Your body will thank you! I can absolutely tell a difference between pre-work out cinnamon toast crunch and white rice and chicken.

The difference in technique and the bar path.

The first video, you can see his shoulders are a bit over the bar as he’s lifting up. A great indicator that he’s not sitting back into the “wedge”, but the bar path clusters are pretty tight. The SECOND video, notice his change in position! Now the shoulders are in line with the arm for a better pull! The bar path continues to be good and in a tight cluster.

A small change but a huge improvement in the overall execution as the load increases. One is “squatting” a deadlift and the other is executing it with his hamstrings (like he should).

Video your power lifts, look at the bar path and see where the adjustments can be made. Why is the bar path so important? Because you want to learn the most efficient way to expend your energy, force, and strength to move a load/resistance as quickly as possible with respect to your body, joints, goals and to avoid wasted energy or movement to get from Point A to Point B. The fastest route is always going to be a straight line!

The best thing to do is get someone that can analyze your lift for you and help you see what to correct. If you are a newbie to the “power” movement, hire someone to show you proper techniques and cues to avoid injuries.

Parents, if you have kids in sports that are doing squats, cleans, bench press and deadlifts, I HIGHLY SUGGEST AND RECOMMEND YOU GET THEM WITH SOMEONE TO CRITIQUE AND SHOW THEM HOW TO PROPERLY EXECUTE THE MOVEMENT. IT WILL GIVE THEM A GREAT CHANCE OF STAYING OFF THE I.R. LIST!
