We’re excited to announce our next exhibition “Frankenstein’s Birthday Party” opening next Saturday, June 23 with a reception from 4 - 6 pm.
.
2018 is the bicentennial of Mary Shelley’s novel, “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.” Why does a 200-year-old ghost story continue to feel so relevant? Beyond the fact that the tale has captured popular imagination, the novel’s lasting impact is grounded in the fact that it is a parable about human nature.  And the most important question it asks is who is the real monster?

Ya lo dijo #BarbaraKruger: “Your body is a battleground”.

Barbara Kruger, born 1945, is an American artist who challenges cultural assumptions by manipulating images and text in her photographic compositions. Kruger’s images grab the viewer’s attention with an approach that is instantly recognisable, using found photographs that are cropped, manipulated and printed in monochrome, and overlaid with text enclosed in a block of red. Early in her career Kruger worked as a graphic designer and picture editor for glossy magazines. When she came to prominence as an artist in the 1980s, her dynamic visual style seemed intertwined with the highly sophisticated advertising techniques of that period. However, her work consistently questions the assumptions that underlie the culture of consumerism. Directly addressing the viewer, Kruger’s texts are often ironic, accusatory or confrontational, challenging us to think about social inequality, gender politics and the false promises of capitalism. Her works criticise the spectacle of mass-media imagery while taking advantage of it as a powerful means of communication. She employs language to question cultural stereotypes, often using the opposition of 'we' (women) and 'you' (men) as a way of attacking the fact that art and culture are usually directed towards a male viewer. In this famous work Kruger reformulated René Descartes’ philosophical proposition of cognitive existence, ‘I think therefore I am’, into a motto for the capatalist world of the 1980s replacing ‘think’ with ‘shop’. #barbarakruger #ishopthereforeiam #arthistory #historyofart #hirshhornmuseum

RepostBy @thebroadmuseum: "#BarbaraKruger's Untitled (Your body is a battleground) was produced for the Women's March on Washington in 1989. This image is simultaneously art and protest; the power of the work lies in the timelessness of its declaration. #5WomenArtists #WomensHistoryMonth
