Training has taken a backseat since #ipfworlds2018. Since then @maelemons & I have dedicated our time to launching our new home for @bandofbarbells and the powerlifting community here in the GTA.

When I do train I make sure I spend it on things I enjoy (like benching) and things I hate( like hookgrip conventionals) 😅. I've always been a firm believer in taking some time off dedicated training to enjoy the finer things in life. I'd recommend taking time off at least once a year to allow the body and mind to relax for once. Treat yourselves to barbell-free vacation, your body deserves it! 🏄🌞😎

FUN FACT- At least 50% of lifters will miss their 3rd attempt Bench at any given meet. OK this is more of an observation based on experience than fact. .
.
Here are my 3 🔑 to hitting those 3rd benches when the odds are vastly against you: .
.
🔹PICK good high percentage attempts! This goes for all 3 lifts too. The likelihood of you hitting a PR under meet conditions is significantly less simply because there are more uncontrollable factors involved than squats and deads. E.g. start, press commands, platform conditions, handoff quality etc. .
.
🔹INTELLIGENT programming. This is very broad. Basically if you hit every single rep during a prep with 95% of those reps being high quality non-grindy reps your setting yourself up for a good PR attempt at meet. Also, practice your 1st and 2nd's! For me, I'll hit my projected opener for at least 12 singles throughout my prep, and my 2nd's 2-3x leading up to the meet. 3rd's are left for when it matters. .

🔹 INSTRUCT how you like your handoff's EVERY TIME you walk out for your attempts. You'd be surprised at how good of a handoff a non-experienced person can give with some precise and to the point instructions. Also remember that they have to give unique hand-off's to 10 other lifters in that flight. Don't just assume they'll remember what your's is for your 2nd and 3rd's. .

To much of our disbelief the news was welcomed with open arms by the powerlifting community here in the GTA. Following a 2-Year hiatus, our most kawaii lifter @shumaistrength decided to take to the platform once again with his team and coach @remullagotgrams by his side. This time up a weight class Derek was armed with the strength, confidence and fortitude to lift his way into an unreal 50kg Total PR and close to 30 Wilks points PR. With that he was able to secure 1st place in the Open 66kg class division and a memory that will last a lifetime.

Derek will be suiting up once again for the 2018 Central Championships with the team in late August. 🙏

For Jimmy this was his very first sanctioned meet and the game plan coming in was plain and simple, establish a Jr. National QT and go 9for9. He did just that when he locked out his 3rd deadlift of 180kg to secure his QT and come 3rd amongst the Jr. 66's.

This was Derek's first meet back on the platform for almost 2 years. And for 2 years I've working on building him up to be the best he can be- going up a weight class and tweaking his technique several times over. Although the cards did not fall in his favor for this meet after only going 6/9 missing his 3rd attempts, he did end up PR'ing his total by almost 50kg and his Wilks by 30 points! Not bad for a 2 year hiatus and a 6/9 performance! His 3rd pull of 185 would of given him an even bigger PR but lost it on grip. He ended up coming first among the Open 66kg 🎖

💥WAVE TRAINING TO ⬆️ STRENGTH💥

A wave is a loading scheme in which each 🌊 consists of 3️⃣ progressively heavier sets with a corresponding decrease in reps. The beauty of this is that as it gets heavier and heavier, you’ll only feel stronger due to the decrease in number of reps.

If you can complete a wave, you begin a slightly heavier wave. I advocate jumping 5-10 pounds depending on the lift.

Stop once you are unable to complete a wave. I recommend 2-4 waves at most. If you can do more than 4 waves, you’ve gone too light to begin with.

I did a 6-4-2 which is a strength wave geared towards bodybuilders looking to add both strength and size. A more traditional strength focused wave might be a 3-2-1 or even 5-3-1 wave.

Wave 1: 285 x 6 / 305 x 4 / 325 x 2
Wave 2: 295 x 6 / 315 x 4 / 335 x 2
Due to the higher volume of reps, I only did ✌🏽 waves with 2 minute rest ⏱

Fun fact: in 2015 I threw my low back after pulling a heavy set of conventionals. This kept me out of the game for a few months and ever since then conventionals scared the crap out of me and all I can ever think of is the back pain I went through whenever I tried to reintroduce it back into my training. But with the help of my coach @stinndler, I’m slowly climbing my way back up! Hoping to break the 125kg plateau I hit way back when 😎#stinnsystem .
