Stories from Ballarat Saleyards have been coming out recently with a lot of shock from the public. There have also been a lot of comments and messages to this page about the workers of the sale yards.
So to set something straight, I want to say that Bear Witness does not believe the workers at this sale yard hold any more or less responsibility for the lives of the animals there than any other role in this system does- the farmers, the slaughterhouse workers and of course most importantly; the consumers. They are all complicit cogs in this normalised, legalised, death based, machine system of animal agriculture.
Likewise, we aren't saying this is a particularly bad saleyard. Rather, that it is just a standard saleyard; one step of the agriculture system that breeds animals to use as a means to an end and treats them with only as much concern necessary to make their bodies as profitable as possible.
I went there to meet some of the animals in this system and tell their stories. This girl was bleeding from out of her nostrils. Just imagine that for a moment, imagine being her just one individual sheep, you're all but invisible in the thousands of other individuals crammed in around you. Frightened, cold and evidently injured, your future uncertain.
What is her suffering worth? Is it any thing more than crunched economic numbers? Does her pain not matter because she was born a sheep?
