Some things in yoga and movement are easier to achieve than some other. What is concidered as an easy pose or movement sequence and what is concidered as a difficult pose or movement sequence changes from person to person. We are embodied human beings in so many amazing, personal ways😍For one person childs pose is the most painful pose, but still he/she does all standing poses in a most beautiful way. One person loves headstand and could spend the rest of her/his life in that pose and other person gets headache even from mentioning the pose. I myself have been struggling for years and years with poses like marichyasana 3 and shoulderstand (have to say that my practice of these difficult poses hasnt been as constant as it should have...because I feel so stiff and uncabable in practicing them) And I am a yoga teacher and they are such a basic poses🙉 Some of my students just wrap their arms around the leg so effortlessly in mari 3😊Today I was SO happy, because I almost caught my fingers in mari 3. I have always used a belt for that. Pose was not beautiful in its form and I was sweating like in sauna, BUT I was SO happy. ALMOST there. So maybe in 2019 I will be a twisting machine😊And another thing: I think for the first time in my life I REALLY kind of settled down in Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) in a way it is supposed to be. Felt corgeous💥I really enjoy these small progresses that seem still to happen. This grasshopper-pose (in the picture) has nothing to do with this story. Its not taken from my todays practice. I didnt take any photos from my practice today. Grasshopper is concidered as a difficult pose, but it is not the hardest one for me, because I have quite open hips and I am quite 💪, so balancing on my arms is a deal, but not so BIG deal. This story is just a reminder that in yoga practice as well as in life we all have struggles. WE ALL HAVE. I have heard some talks that yoga asanapractice deals most with mobility. Yes it is essential part of it, but not the whole truth. Mobility needs a strong partner, it is called stability. To be stable you definately need to build strength too and work with all joints and build their strength through the whole range of motion. Usually we are strong only when we are working with middle ranges of motion of our joints. As soon as joint angle gets bigger or smaller we loose the strength and in that manner we loose also the stability. Strengthening your muscles through the whole range of motion creates also the best possible support for your joints. Want to learn more? Come to my classes or workshops (they will be announced soon). One pose, bakasana, and three different transitions to it. There are many progressions to bakasana by itself, but this one is for them who want to learn to deal with a space when not in asana, but transforming towards the asana. By these transformations or linkings asanas evolve towards the chains of asanas. Sometimes these aspects of asanapractice are called vinyasa, vinyasa krama or in modern language flow. In Iyengar Yoga we put a lot of emphasis in learning and practicing individual asanas in a proper way, we put a lot of effort in dividing them to progressions and variations and we observe multifaceted asanas as such (using props, practicing variations etc.). Its not only because of the technical aspects of the asana, we work in that way, but it is also for the minds sake. Its a way of reaching the mental and physical steadiness, concentration (dharana) and embodied conciousness. But we do have this flowing-aspect also in our practice. Its different aspect, but also important aspect. In these transformations it is about the motion of the body and conciousness. In working with individual asanas its all about actions of the body and conciousness. Mobility with strength, so to say with control. Mobility without control is useless and causes more problems than advantages. I think there is a place and time for so called passive mobility exercises, but as soon as you create new dimensions in your mobility, put that on work in active manner. In that way you create a functional body. Yesterday it was all about restorative practice. The most important thing in Iyengar-based restorative yoga practice is to arrange your body-mind towards the state of equilibrium, to state where your nervous system is able to release, to increase the parasympatethic flow in your autonomic nervous system. So the meaning of the restorative yoga is not to stretch your muscles, joints and ligaments, but put them to a state of balance. Thats why supporting the poses in a thoughtful manner and the understanding of the physical and mental effects of the poses are important: if your body-mind is overloaded with sensations of tension, no matter if it comes from prompting thoughts, overactivating the muscles or from sensing overwhelming stretching etc, it is unpossible to let go. And then the meaning of the restorative is lost. What is balance all about? I headed this big question again as I was planning my yoga class ”Challenge your Balance” to Late Night with UniSport happening. Ofcourse there are many ways to challenge your balance in physical level. What is required always is concentration and presence or so to say mindfulness. These are quite useful principles also to apply to the life outside yogamat. In holding balance you also need to see what is the amount of strength needed, balancing is not an exhausting strength exercise. You need to use the proper amount of strength, not all of it. So here we come to the principle that allready Philosopher Aristoteles figured out in ancient time: the principle of golden mean. So balance in the mat and in the life is not about doing things with all your force all the time or feeling extencive emotions all the time (bad or good) or having all the material things there are to have. Balance is somewhere in between. That is what Aristoteles calls eudaimonia, happiness. Happiness is the ability to balance ones life in everchanging circumstances. To feel strong emotions, to think strong thoughts, but not to stay stucked with them. I will write a blogpost about this theme soon (unfortunately in Finnish). Living busy months right now and sometimes it seems almost impossible to find time for my own yoga practice that nurtures my body&soul. My head is full of things that I should get done.
