We all tend to get carried away with turntables because they are the devices that spin our records. Our love for turntables isn’t misplaced because we really couldn’t do the job without them, but we should spare a thought for our phono preamplifiers too. Even the best turntables in the world are useless if we cannot hear them. In many instances phono circuits are built into our amplifiers so it is a simple case of connection, but in the majority of cases adding external standalone phono preamplifiers will allow us to get far superior sound and more information. Shown here is the MP100 phono preamplifier from McIntosh Laboratories, a beautifully proportioned and sleek retro-styled component with dedicated MM and MC inputs, an array of different outputs including single-ended RCA, coaxial and optical digital outputs and USB for connection to a laptop or PC for ripping music. It also has balanced XLR outputs for high end systems and the best possible sound transfer. Multiple loading settings apply for both MM and MC cartridge options and the sound is wonderful. It also accommodates optimization for mono recordings.
