Part of a series exploring the censorship of a sexualised dance called Baikoko, traditionally performed at weddings in coastal Tanzania. Recently Baikoko has gained wider attention through the music videos of Kenyan Bongo Flava star Diamond Platnumz, and has been banned in Tanzania.
For Armitage, Baikoko dancers, now vilified by society, have developed a witch-like status. When he began drawing Baikoko dancers on a blank page they looked as if they were flying. They reminded him of the hovering witch-like figures in Goya's Atropos (1819-23) on which this painting is based.
