Crunching into your lower back (lumbar spine) once or twice will probably not have much impact on you. However, continuously doing that without time and time again without an awareness will hurt your back in the long run.
Becos Lumbar spine is the one of the more flexible part of our spine compared to Thoracic (upper to middle back) so if there is no conscious awareness to lengthen your spine and lift from the chest, it is always easier to dump into your lumbar spine and hurt it over time.

Always remember for back bends:
1. Do warm ups
2. Engage your abs
3. Lengthen your spine
4. Maybe engage of your hips sometimes by gentle moving it forward (applicable to some poses such as camel, standing back bend, bridge)

Yesterday was day three of aerial teacher training, which is the last day this month. I have bruises and tender spots, and was so tired the last three evenings, but I can't wait to pick up where we left off in July!

As much as I love circus acrobatics I am very grateful that this training is so grounded in yoga. While I know at some point I will gravitate to learning more circus-y tricks, it is always wonderful to sink into the practice of yoga around new people and from new teachers.
