June is ICP Awareness Month
Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) also known as Obstetric Cholestasis (OC) is a liver disorder I have been dealing with since my 29th week of pregnancy.
ICP or OC is not a very common or well known disorder, however it leads to elevated bile acids in the blood and poses risks to our unborn baby.
The elevated bile acids in my blood stream cause extreme itchiness (often resulting in very limited to no sleep) a symptom with no relief until after birth.
The risks to baby are as follows:
- increased chance of bile acids crossing the placenta resulting in sudden deprivation of oxygen
- increased chance of meconium being passed whilst baby is still inside and therefore increasing the risk of sudden stillbirth
We are almost at week 36 now and patiently awaiting our early induction date.
#babymacdavis is being highly monitored by a great team consisting of 3 midwives and an OB to help ensure a healthy delivery.
Please keep our family in your prayers.
