(1Cor. 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.) Christmas is the season of giving; at least that's what I've heard it called before. You know, we go to the store and buy a bunch of stuff....and then we wrap it up and give it to someone. I'm not at all criticizing this tradition, and I love giving and receiving such gifts very much. However, there is something that needs brought to the attention of so many Christians; as well as myself. I think that Dr. Suess nailed it on the head when he wrote "Maybe Christmas, doesn't come from a store...maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more." That old Grinch learned a valuable lesson that many of us fail to. Christmas isn't just about the giving. It's silly to think so. There are many times I've seen people give out of obligation to the time of year, or to the person. Many people give gifts at Christmas out of a sense of "tradition" or guilt. It really is so silly...the great mass of people who buy gifts for others just because it's simply "what you do" at Christmas time. We've all been so buy giving, that we forgot the most important thing. Love. The Bible clearly tells us that it is entirely possible to give, without loving at all; our society is evidence of that. However, it is IMPOSSIBLE to love, without giving. And that's where most of us fall short. You see, Jesus was God's greatest gift to mankind; but it wasn't given out of duty. Jesus wasn't sent because God felt guilty, or because He felt compelled to. Jesus wasn't given out of some kind of obligation that was placed upon God. And it would be perfectly silly to think so. No, Jesus was given because God loves us. He loves us so much, that His love had to be put into action. His love had to be sent in the form of His only Son, to die for the sins of the whole world. That's what Christmas is really about. Yes, giving is important; but it is not to be done without love. Real, true love, the way God intends it to be, is what Christmas is all about. That little Baby in the manger was the greatest gift man will ever know; and it was given because of LOVE.
