Such a heartwarming video. We have so much in common with these beautiful souls. ❤ Video by @ChristineEckstrom and @FransLanting - When the female chimp we knew as Farafa led her young infant, Fanta, to a secret waterhole, we were treated to a display of play that made us wonder about the nature of chimps —and our connection to them.
Fanta was just one year old and had never experienced a water hole before. While her mother watched she explored the water with a leaf, but then she discovered her own reflection and began to interact with it, making funny faces and ultimately kissing herself, like a child might do in front of a mirror. When we showed this video to Jane Goodall she was as enchanted by this display as we were.
Chimpanzee one-year-old infant watching mother grooming, Kibale National Park, Uganda. Chimpanzee babies learn life skills by observing their mothers, and recent studies have shown that chimpanzee mothers actively teach their young different things, including how to use tools. Camera trap videos captured mothers giving their offspring lessons on the use of specialized tools to fish for a meal in the termite hills of Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park. This was the first time that wild chimpanzee behavior has met the scientific criteria for teaching. #chimp#chimpanzee#babychimp#babyanimals#cuteness#kibale#wildlifephotography#wildlifeaddicts#africanwildlife#uganda
