“Blant Svarte Graner”(2018) by Djevel on LP. Been wanting to post this excellent album for some time now but I’ve done lots of Marduk and Funeral Mist posts lately. “Blant Svarte Graner” has become one of my favorite records of the year of outstanding releases that 2018 has been.
For this their 5th album “Blant Svarte Graner” a legend in the scene you might heard about Bård “Faust” Eithun replaced Dirge Rep on drums. Mannevond replaced Erland Hjelvik on “harsh vocals”. Notable names in the Norwegian scene involved but what’s even more interesting is of course the music.
Their sound is very 90’s Norwegian Black Metal. Without being some copycat band trying to sound old school and attempt to capture the essence of what’s already been done before. Djevel can definitely stand proudly on their own with what they create.
Djevel started in Oslo in 2009. Their previous “Norske Ritualer“(2016) is brilliant maybe even just slightly better then “Blant Svarte Graner” and a must have album just like this. The album before that one “Saa Raa Og Kald”(2015) is also an amazing release. The 2 records before those are great but Djevel have gotten better with time in my opinion.
Don’t want to compare their music with others or namedrop a bunch of bands. Djevel have so many different approaches on “Blant Svarte Graner” and is better to experience then to read about.
Really wish more people understood the greatness of Djevel. In my book they should be one of the biggest bands in the scene right now. When the year 2018 is summarized with huge competition from MANY other brilliant releases. It will definitely show just how much I really do enjoy the “Blant Svarte Graner” album.

Zyklon - Two ex-Emperor members, Samoth & Trym (technically three ex-Emperor if you consider the lyrics were written by Faust whilst in jail) ... Criminally underrated band, well ahead of their time

“Stigma Diabolicum”(2007) by Thorns on Kyrck Productions 2015 reissue grey/black swirl vinyl limited to 150 copies. Comes with a poster and on the insert there’s a collage interviews from all sorts of magazines & fanzines Slayer Mag being one I recognize. Got to mention the Greek label Kyrck Productions they rereleased many rare/limited recordings on vinyl & CD by bands like Ved Buens Ende; Strid; Ulver; In The Woods; Manes; Arcturus etc. If you like your Black Metal on physical media and don’t want to pay a fortune they are essential for anyone that want for instance “Those Who Caress The Pale” on vinyl or this Thorns compilation. It was first released in 2007 and has all 6 songs from the legendary instrumental “Grymyrk”(1991) demo recorded with just guitar and bass. 2 songs from the “Trøndertun”(1992) demo that never was released just spread among people within the scene it has one of Thorns best songs ever Æerie Descent. Also 3 songs from when the band was called Stigma Diabolicum (1989-90) 1 song from the “Luna De Nocturnus”(1989) demo and 2 rehearsal songs. Snorre Ruch have made one of the best albums of this century with “Thorns”(2001) he is also considered together with Euronymous to have invented the typical Norwegian Black Metal guitar riff according to Fenriz see the extra material in the 2-disc DVD documentary “Until The Light Takes Us”(2009). Some other prominent figures in the scene like Bård “Faust” Eithun & Marius Vold were once members of Thorns and Stigma Diabolicum. Snorre stoped working on Thorns when he joined Mayhem as Blackthorn on guitar. We all know the rest... This compilation is essential if you’re interested in the early Norwegian scene. Snorre is a musical mastermind and I hope he makes new Thorns album.

“Emperor/Hordanes Land” (1993) split CD by Emperor & Enslaved on Candlelight Records. This was released thanks to Euronymous that was asked by Stephen O'Malley from Candlelight for suggestions of “serious bands” in the Norwegian Black Metal scene, Samoth said in the 1994 Emperor interview done by Jon Nödtveidt. I translated that interview into English some months ago in the blog (link in bio). “Emperor” have 4 songs they rerecorded 2 of them for their masterpiece “In The Nightside Eclipse” (1994). The “Emperor” release was recorded at Studio S and sounds amazing, also Mortiis was bassist and wrote all Emperor lyrics before leaving the band. “Hordanes Land” by Enslaved with future Emperor drummer Trym Torson. The band I never can’t decide my favorite release by sometimes it’s this one, “Frost”; “Vikingligr Veldi”; “Eld” or even their amazing demo “Yggdrasil” from 1992. The booklet states that “Hordanes Land” has 7 songs, but they’re combined into 3 songs also strange that “Epilogue” is before “Prologue”. Both “Emperor” & “Hordanes Land” had been released as separate releases just a few weeks before on 12” vinyls in 1993. I actually had to search for this split CD for some time in the mid 90’s before finding the 2nd press from 1994. I had already bought “Frost” by Enslaved and liked that excellent album and Emperor was my favorite band at the time. Both was recorded in late 1992 and none of them in Grieghallen where both bands recorded later. Both are brilliant and essential in a Black Metal collection. If you’re a big Emperor fan and haven’t heard Enslaved “Hordanes Land” it’s a great release to start with and vice versa.

"Black Metal justifies all my actions, and I owe it all to the art of Black Metal..." This is an article that was released shortly after the death of Euronymous, promoting "King Bård Faust" as the new Leader of Black Metal. Please note, the following aren't quotes from Faust, but quoted directly from the article ABOUT Bård Faust.
"In this time, the black metal scene has been reduced to childish activities having to reassure others that they are 'true' and all others are 'fake'. The quality control aspect has gone. When once bands submitted materiel to King Euronymous now play poor Black Metal in an attempt to ruin what was once such a majestic scene.
Now we shall take back what is rightfully ours. I felt as an individual, we should have a competent leader. A leader who always believed in a true ideology... and never felt the need to change his views every few weeks like many others did. This leader who shall forever be is the warrior Bard FAUST. Bard is the only elite war brother who has never contradicted himself in any way. His thoughts and ideals stand for pure hate for all that is 'good' in the world and his dedication to it is unmatched by any other.
His relationship with our former King Euronymous is one that grew strongly and I feel that in some way Euronymous is living through Bard...
Bard Faust will continue as he has to serve our cause in jail. For this reason we much HAIL the new KING. Let him forever guide us and let us do things for HIM. He has proven to all of us that is takes more than 'talk' and 'words', it takes ACTION. Action is something Bard is all too familiar with. You can support the new King by by either writing to him and sending your letters of support, or buying an official "In support of FAUST" t shirt..."

"After the church was alight, we rode up the mountain to watch it burn. It was very beautiful and exciting" -Bård Faust

Varg Vikernes' crimes of arson and murder seem to be the most infamous, yet barely anybody associates the famous church burnings in Norway with Bård Eithun Faust of Emperor.

Two days after his murder of a homosexual man in Lillehammer (where he brutally stabbed a man to death for making sexual advances at him), Bård Eithun 'Faust' travelled to Holmenkollen Chapel with Varg Vikernes. Faust entered the chapel and poured gasoline over hymnals and Bibles and lit it with a match, causing the chapel to burn to the ground. When Faust was arrested in August 1993 on suspicion of the murder of Euronymous, his involvement in the Holmenkollen Chapel arson was discovered, as well his murder from a year earlier, and subsequently he was sentenced to 16 years in jail.
Bård worked alongside Euronymous at Helvete, and was also part of Thorns with Snorre Ruch (see final photo)- who accompanied Varg during the night of the murder of Euronymous.

I've mentioned probably 100 times that Emperor "In The Nightside Eclipse" (1994) was the first ever Norwegian Black Metal CD I ever bought in the autumn of 1994. This is a blue translucent 180 gram vinyl reissue from 2017. Growing up with Heavy Metal then Thrash Metal and Death Metal. Black Metal was a thing I "learned" to like with time. First time I ever heard Emperor it wasn't like I understood the genre right away. It took a couple of listenings to get into Black Metal, it can almost be compared opera either you get it and love it and there's a learning curve. I got this at a record store in Stockholm, Sweden on a family trip when I was 14 years to our nations capital. I got the CD at the shop Sound Pollution and Nicke Andersson (then drummer of Entombed) was hanging back around the front desk. Remember getting "Unleashed - Across the open sea" for a friend also and another record that I can't for the life of me remember. Anyway Nicke was not impressed of my purchases he looked kind of funny at the guy in the store and smiled. I was actually a huge Entombed fan at the time, I almost bought a white Entombed t-shirt for him to sign. But I was too shy to ask for an autograph. Anyway this reissue vinyl is great and very close to the original first print that was released in 1995. This is my favorite Emperor record ever and it would rank high in my top-10 albums of all time.
