By the time of Moctezuma Ilhuicamina (Moctezuma I) the location of Aztlán was a much a mystery to the Aztec people themselves as it is to Chicanos and the Indigenous people of today. Archeologists have looked at archeological and linguistic evidence to appromiximate the migration out of Aztlán would have began in the year 1100, the same time my own ancestors completed their pilgrimage to establish Qosqo, the beginning of the Tahuantinsuyo Empire. By the time of Moctezuma, the Mexicas would have been away from Aztlán for over 400 years. Moctezuma assembled his greatest warriors, as well as 60 mystics, sorcerers, and healers for his own expedition to find and reclaim Aztlán. Some historians believe this was a political theater show, meant to calm tensions between the then warring Indigenous Nations of Mexico, through their common heritage, though I believe in the midst of a changing world and landscape, with an expanding and increasingly complex empire, Lord Moctezuma may have simply wished to look back to the days of paradise in his people's most ancient ancestral lands. In Moctezuma's kingdom of Tenochtitlan, there were wars to be waged, tributes to be paid, and people to feed, in Aztlán death had no power over the Indigenous Mexican people, and people were never in hurt or hunger. When the expedition reached Coatepec, they transformed the forms of the expedition crew into birds, were they were able to fly north and reach Aztlán. When the expedition arrived in Aztlán the were greated by an ancient people, who still spoke Nahautl, and an ancient woman calling herself the mother of Huitzilipochtli, the Aztecs had brought with them their finest cacao, and silvers, feathers, and cloth sent by Moctezuma as gifts for the ancestors, but the ancient woman refused them, saying "You and your people in Tenochtitlan die because you have spoilt yourself with cacoa, and these things of luxury, they have ruined you." The sorcerers and warriors returned to the secular world, dejected and defeated. Paradise Lost.
