AYA HIJAZI

October 17, 2016 marks the 900th day that @rfkhumanrights client Aya Hijazi has been held in pretrial detention in Egypt.

Aya Hijazi, an American-Egyptian and long committed to social justice and community service, founded the volunteer-based NGO Belady (“My Country”) with her Egyptian husband Mohammed Hassanein in Cairo in September 2013 to educate, provide temporary housing, and ultimately reunite street children with their families.

They funded the new foundation by foregoing a honeymoon and a formal wedding ceremony.

In accordance with the law, Aya and Mohammed applied to the Ministry of Social Solidarity to register Belady as a legally recognized nonprofit, submitting necessary paperwork to the Egyptian government by December 2013 to fulfill all necessary requirements to begin operation.

On May 1, 2014, the Egyptian police raided the Belady premises and conducted a warrantless arrest of Aya, her husband, two other volunteers, and all the street children who were present. Four other volunteers were arrested later. Only one of them has been released from detention in the last 900 days.

Egyptian law provides that the maximum period of time that a person may be held in temporary detention is two years. For Aya, her husband, and two of the other defendants, that period expired on May 1, 2016.

Aya was charged on September 8, 2014 and is facing seven false charges.

1. Human trafficking of minors
2. Indecent assault of minors
3. Sexual exploitation of minors
4. Kidnaping and exploitation of minors
5. Unlawful detention and torture of minors
6. Facilitating and inciting sexual deviation and exploitation
7. Illegal formation of the Belady Foundation

Aya and Mohamed are facing a maximum sentence of life in prison. Their next hearing is on November 19, 2016.

It was a great blessing to spend the other day with the Orthodox Christian Network at the 2017 Concordia Summit in Manhattan! From former First Lady Laura Bush and Cabinet member and businesswoman Elaine Chao to musician Yo-yo Ma and Egyptian civil rights activist Aya Hijazi, the plenaries were an oustanding array of the best and brightest of Concordia's vision that "cross-sector collaboration can more adequately address global challenges to create a more prosperous and sustainable future."
.
What an honor to get to talk with so many leaders, both emerging and established, in business, philanthropy, politics, tech, diplomacy, and private-public sector partnerships! .
One of the highlights was meeting the chairman and founder of the multinational conglomerate Libra Group. He shared his notion that great wisdom can come out of great suffering, and communicated an unexpected passion for remembering and learning from the lessons and legacies of history.

April 21, 2017: Trump predicted France's new terror attack would affect its election outcome and once more pressured China to cut-off North Korea. His prediction proved of the French election proved true insofar as right Marine Le Pen. Le Pen's party has had ties to holocaust deniers, opposes the EU and rejects the large waves of Muslim immigration. Although Le Pen is not expected to win the runoff, the fact she is in the running shows French populist anger at the EU's failed approach to extremism terrorism. He also highlighted the return of Egyptian American Aya Hijazi, who had been held in Egypt during the Obama administration for 3 years as a part of a wider crackdown on NGOs. Although this was likely the result of President Trump's warm relationship with Egypt's leader General Sisi, her imprisonment was due largely to his undemocratic crackdown on civil society. Hijazi worked with orphans. Further, Trump noted an executive order aimed at reducing the tax regulatory burden and touted again the visit by the New England Patriots. Trump also slammed the 100 days measure. This arbitrary cut-off point is often thought to represent the "honeymoon" period of a presidency when the President has the biggest mandate and most political capital and room to move forward his agenda.

“Do not leave us here in the jails and forget us, do not let us lose hope in justice and humanity.” (Aya Hijazi)

Human rights defender Aya Hijazi has spent the past two years in an Egyptian jail cell. In 2013, she founded the Belady Foundation for Street Children, in response to the massive numbers of children she saw living, working, and sleeping on Cairo’s streets.
Less than a year after founding Belady, Egyptian security forces arrested Aya, her husband and four other Belady volunteers. They were charged with sexually abusing the children and paying them to participate in anti-government demonstrations — allegations that human rights organisations have proved false.
