When we started speaking about self-love at WWCS last year, we made the commitment to (1) speak about the topic with honesty and (2) draw on relevant research to support helping our community to understand what we as social scientists know about this concept. In other words, we did not want to give you any romantic or airy-fairy notions of self-love, we wanted to talk about this topic using tested social research.
.
We are now seven month into our year of radical self-love #radicalselflove2017 which is about bringing clarity to this amorphous and difficult to define phenomena. It is about how to turn what we know into what we do.
.
With just a few months to go you can still join our discussions by visiting our Radical Self-Love page on our website where month we focus on an element or aspect of self-love through our written and video blogs, checking out our weekly self love posts here on instagram and our Facebook Live at Lunch sessions, art sessions at our office, free online seminars and more.

“You have to learn to leave the table when love is no longer being served.” - Nina Simone.
.
Self-respect is a courageous act of self-love and for many of us leaving the table means facing our greatest fear – the possibility that we may lose them.
.
Whether an intimate partnership, a friendship or kinship – our relationships are prized possessions in which we are often reluctant to introduce change but sometimes leaving the table of certain relationships/situations is necessary.
.
Here is one way you can tap into the power of self-respect.
.
STOP LYING TO YOURSELF
Being honest with yourself requires that you stop hiding from or denying the parts of you that you do not like. .
Sometimes we remain in relationships many years after the expiry date because we are waiting for what we actually feel with this person to magically become what we think we should feel. .
You have accepted that this relationship evokes unpleasant or unhappy feelings, now what? Well, it’s time to get very honest with yourself and the other person. Start with this simple act: If you don’t want to do something, instead of saying you don’t have time, be honest and say you are not interested.
.
Throughout the month of we'll highlight more self respect to-do's as we continue our #radicalselflove2017 journey.

Since ancient times, humans have assigned healing and transformational properties to water.
.
.
Today, we still turn to water for a sense of calm and clarity. We spend our vacations on the beach; get exercise and enjoyment from water sports like surfing, scuba diving, sailing, and swimming; refresh ourselves with long showers and soothing baths, and often build our lives and homes around being near the water.
.
.
Here are some ways how water can heal the mind and body and help you tap into your most calm and creative state of being.
.
(1) Water gives our brains a rest. - Being around water gives our brains and our senses a rest from overstimulation.
.
(2) Water can induce a meditative state. - Though we may not be conscious of it, the water could be inducing a mildly meditative state of calm focus and gentle awareness.
.
(3) A blue mind is a creative mind. - Hopping in the shower, as many people know, can be a great way to trigger ideas when our brains are in a creative rut. Rather than switching off, when you’re showering, your brain switches into a different mode.
.
(4) Exercise by or in water is good for our bodies and brains. - Being outside near water while you’re exercising will potentially give you more of a mental boost than exercising in a crowded, hectic gym environment with TVs in front of you and people all around.
.
.
For those of us in the Caribbean we're extremely lucky to have water all around us. So when you get time go take a dip in the ocean, relax by the river or even dance in the rain.

1. A Stable and Reliable Internet Connection. It is important to have a dependable connection, as interruptions in the service can hamper the process and impede therapeutic outcomes.

The story that moved China: 'Devoted son who lost both arms to electric shock spoon-feeds sick mother using his TEETH'
.
.
The 48-year-old man has overcome his disability to take care of his ageing mother on his own. Chen Xinyin from Chongqing, south west China, lost his arms after getting a massive electric shock aged seven.
.
.
Since then, he's learnt to cook, farm and since 2014 looks after his bedridden, 91 year old mother. .
.
Working with his feet is not without cost. Chen Xinyin forgoes socks all year round because they take too long and too much effort to put on. This means that in the winter he often gets frostbites on his toes, making life even more difficult.
.
.
Once, a villager suggested that he should consider begging. Beggars in the large cities can earn tens of thousands of Yuan (upwards of £1,000) per year, which is significantly more than Chen Xinyin currently makes. He was indignant about the suggestion and replied angrily: 'I have no arms but I have good feet'.
.
.
A story of courage, a story of strength a story of family. We commend you Chen! Let's learn from Chen. This week we ask that you shift the focus from 'what you don't have' and use whatever 'you do have' to spread a little kindness wherever you are.

#tbt to June for Issue One of CARE Magazine in the @ttguardian edited by Marsha L Riley. If you haven’t been following CARE, be sure to tune in to 95.1FM every Monday from 5:15 PM and check out their column every Wednesday in the Guardian Newspaper.
.
.
This first edition of CARE – The Magazine was filled with pearls of wisdom from some of the foremost authorities in parenting. .
.
Our very own Dr Tracie Rogers, Managing Director of WWCS contributed the article 'Your Daughter is a Masterpiece in Progress' and reminds parents of confident girls, that it’s easy to become yet another silencing device for girls but while preparing girls for adulthood, we must be careful to leave their ability to self-advocate and set boundaries intact.
.
.
Kudos to Marsha and the Guardian Newspaper for creating this wonderful and informative resource for parents. Look out for more contributions from Tracie in the upcoming issues. Care is published the last Friday of each month and can also be accessed online via the Guardian app.

Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.
.
.
If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you're likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.
.
.
Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:
-Increased life span
-Lower rates of depression
-Lower levels of distress
-Greater resistance to the common cold
-Better psychological and physical well-being
-Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
-Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress
.
.
Today we ask you to spread some positive vibrations!

"The moment the slave resolves that he will no longer be a slave, his fetters fall. Freedom and slavery are mental states". ~ Mahatma Gandhi
.
.
As many across the Caribbean observe Emancipation Day today, there is no better opportunity for us to all reflect on one of the most important freedoms...Mental Freedom.
.
.
Mental freedom means liberation from the conditioning that has been programmed into us. It is liberation from the learning, beliefs, values, opinions, prejudices, judgments, world views, attitudes, standards, which we harbor in our minds because of our interaction with the external world. .
.
Mental freedom means emancipation from all these. If you'd like to experience more mental freedom, try answering these questions: -Am I opening myself up to new experiences? -Do I appreciate my right now moments? -Do I allow my own sense of limitation hold me back? -Have I been making
excuses for a life that is less-than? -Am I prepared to meet defeat in order to enjoy success?
.
.
Have a great day!

A WHOLE NEW YOU.

July has come to a close and so today we share our final piece on self-sabotage in familial relationships and ways to overcome them. As we continue on our #radicalselflove2017 journey, we will tackle a new topic in August.
.
.
Become willing and open to letting relationships go if they are repeatedly hurting you.
.
.
What happens when relationships cannot work despite all of our best efforts and conversations? What happens when misunderstanding becomes the norm and not the exception in a familial relationship? .
.
It may be time to let go of that relationship. The act of ‘letting go’ can be interpreted differently in various circumstances. In other words, ‘letting go’ does not always mean that you choose not to interact with that person at all. It may simply mean reconfiguring the relationship in such a way to avoid less conflict.
.
.
For many people, this involves carving some degree of distance. This too can be accompanied by grief. Grief is a sign that that something has been lost. It doesn't mean that the thing which is lost should be retrieved.
.
.
We want to a big thank you to our WWCS team mate Akilah Riley-Richardson for penning our July series. Our Counsellors at WWCS are willing to discuss with you more ways in which you can manage your family relationships so that you experience fulfilment and joy. If you wish to embark on this journey, please contact us for your free consultation at 868-347-1042.

At times, family relationships can be a site of deep pain and trauma. There are times when we contribute to the pain we experience in these relationships. .
.
Though it is unhealthy to blame ourselves, taking responsibility for areas of self -sabotage in familial relationships can create an opportunity to chart the type of life that you desire for yourself.
.
.
Accept, don’t pretend: Have realistic expectations of your family.
.
.
We always expect the family space to be the safe space. This is the space where we believe we can find the quality of relationships we need for our own personal nurturing. However, quite a few people have come to realise that their blood relationships are very far from safe spaces. .
.
Being unable to accept this reality hinders your ability to manage the expectations of the family relationships around you. You begin to put too much pressure on family members to be the types of people you need them to be. This, over time, also can begin to destroy you.
#aWHOLEnewYOU #2017radicalselflove #mentalhealth #holistichealth #wellness #selfcare #support #mentalhealthawareness #trinidadandtobago #caribbean
.
.
This is just another way in which you can address self-sabotage in a familial settings. Our Counsellors at WWCS are willing to discuss with you more ways in which you can manage your family relationships so that you experience fulfilment and joy.
