On the morning of our second day of third day of hiking on #Yakushima#屋久島 Philipp Lutz Photography and I went backtracking for a bit after we had walked past some sections of the forest during night and rain the morning before. Finally we were met with the conditions we wanted after the previous two days had almost no rain and no misty atmosphere. Here you see the might Jōmon Sugi 縄文杉. Jōmon Sugi is a large Cryptomeria tree and a UNESCO World Heritage. It is the oldest and largest among the old-growth cryptomeria trees on the island, and is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old.Other estimates of the tree's age include "at least 5,000 years more than 6,000 years and up to 7,000 years old. The tree's name is a reference to the Jōmon period of Japanese prehistory. Jōmon Sugi stands 25m tall and has a volume of approximately cubic meters. Jōmon Sugi is located on the north face of Miyanoura-dake, the highest peak on Yakushima, at an elevation of 1300 m. Discovery of the tree in 1968 sparked moves to protect the forests of Yakushima.
