Concorde, a true beauty. One of only two supersonic aircraft to enter commercial service. Such an amazing airplane, so sleek and elegant, one of my favorites!——————
Concorde was a true supersonic, topping at 1,354 mph, (2,179 km/h) and she did it very efficiently too, ranging over 4,000 nmi.
Concorde was only flown over transatlantic routes, meaning she wasn’t seen often over land. The designers of Concorde took into account the fuel burn required to reach and maintain supersonic, very economical. ——————
Turbojet engines were used for Concorde. She had four afterburner turbojet engines that were ultra-efficient and brand new at the time, when Concorde entered service in 1969. Afterburner is when air isn’t compressed before combustion in the engine, the air is fed around the combustion chamber and directly into the afterburner. Afterburner is constantly on to maintain supersonic in fighters and such. This method provides so much more thrust than no afterburner, but it consumes much more fuel too. Concorde was different. She used full afterburner to reach cruising speed of 1,341 mph, but, the engines were able to maintain supersonic without the use of afterburner, saving fuel.
More stuff about her, Concorde’s interior was TINY. Very small seats with only 4 abreast seating (4 seats in a row). But, she set the speed record for the fastest commercial supersonic transatlantic flight, in just under three hours from New York, New York to London Heathrow. ——————
Concorde, due to her wing shape, had to land and take off at an extremely high angle of attack. So high that the pilots could not see the runway out of their cockpit windows, so the actual nose of the Concorde dropped during takeoff and landing. It was unofficially dubbed ‘droop snoot’.
No idea who took the picture.
