Summer - grey warbler or riroriro (Gerygone igata), stretching in the early morning sun.

New Zealand's most widely distributed endemic bird species. With an iconic song that is frequently heard, this small insectivorous bird is not so often actually seen.

Good morning, and Happy Thursday! Throwback to December when I had the fabulous experience of seeing one of my favorite flicks [with one of my favorite ladies, @randigirl4], 'The Birds,' on the big screen! Please enjoy the stunning ceiling of the historic North Park Theatre—painted by Pan-American Exposition artist, Raphael Beck—accompanied by some words of wisdom from Mrs. Bundy, the outspoken ornithologist who briefly educates us [with some unnerving numbers] in the film's diner scene: have a truly tanfastic Thursday, everyone!

'There is very definitely a difference, Miss...They're both perching birds, of course, but quite different species. I would hardly think that either species would have sufficient intelligence to launch a massed attack; their brain pans are not big enough. Birds are not aggressive creatures, Miss. They bring beauty into the world. It is mankind, rather...It is mankind, rather, who insists upon making it difficult for life to exist on this planet. Now, if it were not for birds...
..I hardly think a few birds are going to bring about the end of the world...
..Birds have been on this planet, Miss Daniels, since Archaeopteryx, a hundred and forty million years ago. Doesn't it seem odd that they'd wait all that time to start a...a war against humanity? That would hardly be possible...Because there are eight thousand, six hundred and fifty species of birds in the world today, Mr. Carter. It is estimated that five billion, seven hundred and fifty million birds live in the United States alone. The five continents of the world...
..Probably contain more than a hundred billion birds.' - Mrs. Bundy | Ethel Griffies

At TRBO, we believe that bird banding can serve multiple purposes while keeping the impact on birds minimal. We can obtain important data on Neotropical migrants and on little known resident birds, share knowledge between institutions and use it as an educational tool for ecologists and citizens alike. Conservation through education. Dr. Chase visting from Salve Regina University at the table banding a Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina).

Caught in our nets this morning, the Worm-eating Warbler (Helmitheros vermivorum) is a winter resident in Belize. This wood warbler spends most of its time foraging in the leaf litter. It may not be as colourful as other warblers but it is definitely one of our favourites at the station.

Cold weather reminds me of bald eagles. It was freezing the day I took this photo. Bald eagles are a huge conservation success story. Hope we have more like them looking back in a hundred years.

Young Barn Owl. This guy was one of five nestlings being banded. Though he appears to be smiling, he was no happier than his siblings at being taken from his nest box to be weighed, measured and banded. There was a fair amount of hissing at the indignity of it all, but the information gathered is so very important and the spark of birding and avian conservation might just have been lit for some young birders that day. #barnowl #birdsofinstagram #bird #owl #banding #birdbanding #babyowl #avianconservation #igs_birds

One of our favourite biters, these guys can pack a punch on your fingers with that seed crushing bill. Black-faced Grosbeak (Caryothraustes poliogaster), annual resident of our area. @zoopilote
