Our pastry tour of Brussels was brief, in part because I hadn't done any research beforehand, but also because we never really made it into the city early enough in the day to take advantage of the best fresh baked goods. I reckon we'll her back at some point though, loved it! What we did try was Aux Mervillieux de Fred - they sell a few tasty looking viennoiseries but they're signature treat is, as the name would suggest, merveilleux (marvellous in French). These sweet little gems originated in Belgium, and are essentially a sandwich of meringue and whipped cream, coated in more whipped cream, and dusted in chocolate shavings or flavoured fruity meringue crumbs. We knew that we had Mandy Belgian treats to enjoy in our short time in Brussels so we shared a single mini Exentrique - cherry flavoured merveilleux, it was light, fluffy, crisp and not as overwhelmingly sweet as I had anticipated.
