One thing I’m seriously passionate about teaching is the REAL LIFE FACTS surrounding executive functioning - y’ know - those tiny little functions that we sometimes tap into (#JOKES). The executive functions are on high rotation *aaaall* day long. Comprehension, analysis, evaluation, inhibition, decision making, rationalising, initiation, impulse control, risk assessment and the list goes on! But here’s the thing, these functions happen in the pre-frontal cortex, that bit right behind your eyebrows, and in children? It’s super slow to develop. Yeah. You heard right! The pre frontal cortex of a child is literally a blank canvas taking its time to work it all out - to *develop* these functions. Which means a child CAN NOT do this stuff! Until their brain has developed, grown, practiced, failed, tried again and eventually started to work it all out. A child literally can’t always choose the safest options, sit still on their chair, not talk over others, know where their shoes are, rationalise that there isn’t a monster in their bedroom. They just can’t. And because of this? 90% of children’s problem behaviours are a result of the natural developmental process. SERIOUSLY!!!! 😮😮😮 And what this means is, they often don’t have a behavioural problem at all. Find this interesting? Get yourself along to my Brains = Behaviours workshop, for two full days of info like this, and strategies for behaviour management through braincare. Prepare for your mind to be blown!!!
