Old Japanese Ligustrum, new bonsai. This 40+ year old ligustum was pulled out by a neighbor years ago and left for the trash. I rescued it, planting in a plastic tub, and kind of forgot about it for several years. Today I noticed the soil looked especially muddy and the leaves were chlorotic, so I removed it, washed the roots clean, then repotted in nice fresh bonsai mix into its first bonsai pot. The trunk and all primary branches are completely hollow from its years as an abused shrub. Deadwood work will be next year when the tree is firmly rooted in the pot. I just gave it a bit of wiring and shaping now as well, and it suddenly had a nice posture and shape, not to be ignored again!
