Trident Maple root-over-rock finally defoliated and branches shortened and wired. I made this from a tiny Trident whip which was tied to the stone as part of an @austinbonsaisociety workshop back in 2005. It had several years of unrestrained growth before chopped back, then the cycle repeated, building the form piece by piece.

A Winged Elm ( Ulmus alata) after its winter cleanup and branch placement. I colleted this tree in North Austin years ago. Winged Elms have the same corky growths as Cedar Elms, just are much more pronounced: the branch wings and corky bark can be twice the height. This can make wiring tricky. I enjoy the high airy feel of this tree, a bunjin like feel.

Dwarf Yaupon Holly, which was collected in North Austin nine years ago, found by the side of the road as trash after the homeowners were relandscaping their yard. Here it is after getting a winter trim and clean up. I'm planning on placing this tree in more sunshine next year to build the density of the branches. Yaupons will live happily in light shade, but it's hard to get the small leaves and tight branching we need for bonsai without strong sunshine.

A Juniper from @thehuntingtonlibrary which has quite the story to tell. Once a tall and mighty tree as indicated from the vast amount of deadwood, one small living vein persisted on. That's what it's all about, trees keep on striving and bonsai illustrates the story for us to learn from.
We've been MIA the last couple of days as the poster transitioned to a new device. Onward and upward!

Ashe Juniper today trimmed back, wired and shaped. This is an old tree, but still a young one as a bonsai. Originally collected by Bill Cody near Fort Hood, Texas, it has a wonderful old shari which runs like a fin down the trunk, and old jins at the top. This is a work in progress; it was originally supposed to be a bunjin, but the top proportions are too full and lush for that now. I may cut back at some point and try for that again, but for now I'm enjoying its new silhouette.

Cedar Elm winter cleanup and wiring. Once all the leaves are gone it's a great time to evaluate and shape the branches. Sometimes trees don't seem to change year to year, & this is why taking pictures is so important. Every time a bonsai is worked on, it should be improved. The art of bonsai is our editing combined with the accumulation, or accretion of the complexity: more ramified branches, more detail in deadwood, improved nebari, bark, etc. Sometimes the only way to see these changes is by taking pictures to show the progress. This old elm was collected many years ago from a stump which had been burned about 70% of the way around, which now gives it its unique look.

Wild is The Wind by Nina Simone was playing while I wired and trimmed this Southern Hackberry. I think I envisioned a wild tree, unteathered during this styling.. a creature of the wind. I collected this tree several years ago next to a power pole; it had been chopped back for years right to the ground and I dug it out before they sprayed with herbicide the next year. Today the remaining leaves were removed and nearly all branches were wired out for direction and movement. It was also shortened by about 5 inches, cutting back to a better apex. This is still a broken and damaged tree, but is developing its shape out better each year, able to fly!

Chinese Ligustrum which began as an airlayer of the apex on a larger tree. This species layers really well, almost as easily as a ficus, and develops a beautiful radial nebari. Japanese Ligustrum. Can a bonsai be so "ugly" that it becomes beautiful again? I collected this from a neighbor's yard almost 10 years ago and although I loved the look of age, the extreme reverse taper seemed insurmountable as a bonsai, so it was left alone to just grow while others got the attention. Then looking at it one day, I ignored the flaws and started its journey as a bonsai. Its a strange old one, with a fin of deadwood on the right like a mane, a rotted old stumped cut, and branches emerging at odd angles, but this odd beast captured my heart.

Japanese Boxwood with a trim, leaf pruning and some guy-wires to rearrainge branches today. This bonsai was dug by a friend in a cemetary in San Antonio they were renovating. The "before" photo was one year after I got it in 2005. The long trunk shari is natural and was there when collected. It's a special tree to me, one which reminds me of my friend.

Chinese Holly trimmed, unwired and large leaves removed for the low light of winter. This tree was collected from a trashed shrub in my neighborhood many years ago. Japanese Boxwood bonsai in training. This is a 40 year old plant I collected from a friend's home, and all trunks are connected at the wide base. Azalea semi-cascade going into winter and getting a trim and shaping today. Some of the Spring flower buds were removed, but the focus right now is building the branches. Japanese Boxwood after an end of season thinning of the old leaves and guy-wiring some branches to spread everything apart. Shorter days of winter with a thick canopy of leaves on broadleaf evergreens can mean that inner shoots and branches will die back unless the outer portions are thinned to let in more light. I rescued this tree from a neighbor who had ripped it from the ground and left it in a pile for garbage about 10 years ago. It was part of a home foundation planted about 1975. The trunk has a gentle twist forming a double apex, which as it continues to mature will be encouraged to become wider and more rounded.

Kingsville Boxwood after a good trim and shaping. This is the "mother tree" where the original cutting of the previous one was taken. I bought this in a small 4" pot from Joe Waite of Bonsai Exotica just South of Austin in 2003. It may have been my first bonsai plant purchase from a nursery (all others had been collected). Before 2003, I didn't know of another person doing bonsai and it was that year that I discovered @austinbonsaisociety and all the generous knowledgeable people ready to share their passion. I do wire out the branches on Kingsvilles, but when I can I prefer guy-wires to reposition them. It's much safer for the brittle wood.

#bonsai #austinbonsaisociety #kingsvilleboxwood #buxusmicrophyllacompacta

Kingsville Boxwood, which I grew out from a cutting, getting trimmed and thinned the other day. Its pot had broken and it needed an emergency repot, so I took the opportunity to shape it too. These can have such congested foliage that insects like scale can take up residence, so an occasional thinning and cleanup is required. The branch which this cutting came from had a long shari running the length, and even now, maybe 6 years later, the trunk has created an interesting callous around the wound, giving the trunk the illusion of more age.

Large Southern Hackberry, branches cleaned up and some wired for better movement. I collected this 4 years ago as a large trunk of a weed tree on a boxwood dig which the owner also wanted removed. It already had a large hollow in the front when found, but it was carved a bit for shape. All branches had to be regrown as it was cut back from a 15 foot tall tree. I love the old warty bark offset by the fine twigs. It's still a young bonsai, as it matures I plan for the canopy to eventually be at least as wide as it is tall.

Southern Hackberry just after losing the last of its fall leaves. Branches were adjusted and repositioned now that I can see into the tree easily. I dug this from a neighbor's yard 11 years ago; it was a weed tree growing in their flower bed which they wanted out. Since then it has been shaped in a soft broom style, but as a leaning tree, something perhaps not classically Japanese, but to my eye it has a natural feel.

A Satsuki Azalea from our continued exploration of @thehuntingtonlibrary. The first branch and lowest on the tree has amazing movement! That branch sets the bottom outline of the overall canopy. This one was donated by the San Gabriel Nursery in memory of Fred Waichi Yoshimira. Japanese Boxwood trimmed & wires removed for winter. I'm trying for a wide spreading crown with an oak-like look to the shape, much like the trees we see here all over Austin. I collected this with a friend from a front yard hedge about 4 years ago (this is its first year in a bonsai pot). It has needed many grafts to tighten the canopy, and more still are needed next Spring. Boxwoods can be long term projects.

An interesting Zelkova forest slab planting on display @thehuntingtonlibrary. I counted 26 tiny trunks to make up this forest. The thin slab and clumping of trunks gives the surreal appearance of a scattered forest in the hills somewhere remote. Love seeing diffsrent species used for bonsai!

Old Southern Hackberry now defoliated to reveal the branching. On almost all branches and up along the trunk there are hollows and cavities, meaning bending & moving anything must be done with care. A few branches were gently adjusted and I realized the whole tree needs to be tilted forward and over at the next repotting in Spring. Bonsai seem to always require little adjustments like this as we see ways to improve them. I collected this tree in 2008 beside an abandoned parking lot north of Austin. It had been chewed by deer and abused for a long time before I stumbled upon it.

Ashe Juniper after its first work. The old bark was meticulously cleaned from the deadwood and branches were cut back and lightly wired for direction. Next repot, it will need to have a change in the planting angle. Eventually the foliage needs to be much tighter and closer to the trunk. I collected this tree from a rocky hill north of Austin in Spring 2016 and it has adjusted to its life in a pot remarkably well.

Virginia creeper, defoliated, exposes the details of the branches. I repotted this weeping bonsai recently from a more standard rectangle pot into this old hex celadon Chinese pot to give the roots more room and to allow more space for the dropping branches. Virginia Creeper has one of the most bright fall leaf color, but is also fragile, and this year winds whipped all those leaves away before I took a photo. I collected this vine many years ago, and it has been nice to see it mature.
