Hipgnosis was formed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell in 1968 and created some of the classic album covers of the seventies and eighties. Their work for Pink Floyd used surrealism, humour and visual puns. Often using the square format Hasselbad format, perfect for 12" covers. Long before Photoshop, they staged many of the events for real. The guy spent quite a bit of time in a yoga position, submerged in water, breathing through diving apparatus. The stuntman really was set alight and stayed alight while Powell captured the 15 shots he needed, one of which was used on the front cover of "Wish you were here". The third image shows the influence of Belgian surrealist René Magritte.
