I remember someone once telling me that when you hit middle age you have a defining moment that makes you feel every bit of your age and it’s usually courtesy of someone much younger. I haven’t a clue who told me because I was in my late teens and they were probably my age now and Lord knows I *thought* that was old back then. Like really old. Like ready to meet your maker kind of old. Funny how I don’t think that’s old. At all. Now. To be honest, since turning 50 in May I don’t feel any different. In my mind I’m still 20 something and hip 😎, though using that vernacular is probably a dead giveaway that I am anything but 😉. Denial has been my best friend for the last 6 months. Wrinkles, sure, but I just ignore them; AARP sending me membership forms, total denial that I’m nearing “that” age, quickly toss ‘em in the trash; grey hairs, got ‘em, just cover those suckers up with dye and return to denial; hot flashes, horror and absolute denial; a couple of “pre-plan your funeral” letters (btw how rude 😠 and do they know something I don’t?!) followed by major denial. Signs, signs and more signs, yet I remained blissfully in denial...that is until today, when a very sweet, young, 20 something store cashier asked me if I had plans this weekend. I told her I was stoked to be seeing Sammy Hagar in concert which was met with a blank stare 😐 and a “who?”. 15 minutes, and a lengthy explanation 🤓 about the heavy metal, glam rock, southern rock and alternative bands of the 80’s later, I realized her eyes had glazed over 🙄 and she still had no clue who/what I was talking about. I think I may have even blacked out 😑 for a moment when she said she didn’t know who Van Halen was ::gasp:: 😮, seriously, c’mooooon, Eddie is a 🎸 rock legend 🙌 ! Yep, I definitely had my ‘defining moment’. Who knew it’d be because someone didn’t know about the music of my teens? Yep. It happened today. It was late. But I had it. That’s OK, I’m still planning to rock out at the concert tomorrow night 🤘😛 no matter who is watching or how “middle aged” I look.
