Design No. 479: Capri Electric Piazza Game for Two Composers (or Four Conductors)
atelier ying, Nyc
The issues I’ve been contemplating, of Furtwangler fluttering about to give his downbeat, Solti’s presence contrasting with a strict, steady rhythm executed by a very loud Chicago orchestra, Bernstein following Furtwangler’s expressionistic ways, Puccini and Leoncavallo bashing each other in a Milan cafe, Von Karajan telling his orchestra, “you’re playing beautifully but none of what you’re saying is true”, Beecham meeting Puccini decades later and also Beecham trimming Mozart recitatives, the singing presence of Callas, Pasta, and Claire Dux... all this “meandering about” I personify in a piazza game set in Capri borrowed from a 1970’s Tudor Electric Football game whereby miniature pedestrian figures in a piazza are vibrating all over and to the sides where 4 cafes compete with each other, replete with a bell tower, a fountain and vaulted entrances & exits. A silly design for very serious musical issues of authenticity which I have no business talking about but like everybody else I find immensely entertaining. If anything please go out today and buy a Tudor electric football game.

Design No. 478: A Map Maker’s Desk
atelier ying, Nyc
Martin Martin’s A Description of the Western Islands of Scotland (1703) is the inspiration for these whirlwind thoughts that happen on paper whilst sitting in a booth & eating some hearty tidbits.
A design of a map maker’s lap desk for someone who goes from collecting & fictionalizing travelogues towards the lifestyle akin to a wandering monk written from experience.
18th century portable soup, a whist deck and wig accessories are also stored in this utilitarian lacquered chest.

Design No. 477: Rudolf Bing, Assistant Intendant’s Office at Darmstadt, 1928
atelier ying, Nyc

A whirlwind of related ideas led to this drawing of a “curio cabinet” for an opera administrator. You can follow its pedigree of gramophone, theatrophone, dollhouse, table bar, washstand, teletype machine, dictaphone. Nevertheless, it’s custom made in memory of Bing’s first big job at the Hessian State Theater. Curiously, E.F. Benson’s novel, Secret Lives has a scene that’s almost identical. This surrealist, metaphysical scene of the retired Bing ruminating over the Met’s season schedule (posted on the wall like a map) and his honorary medals in a cabinet that also links to the Met via a built-in theatrophone function, or to receive news from his European talent scouts via a teletype.

Design No. 477: Lucia di Lammermoor Théâtrophone for a Mad Scene
atelier ying, Nyc

The modern coloratura soprano must metaphorically scale Dante’s levels, perhaps the tower/phone booth shape relates to her singing body too but irregardless, this little piece of furniture that resembles an organ with a mind boggling set of keyboards (little inclined lap desk papers representing organ ranks) and a standing desk with a photo-booth in the rear might be a perfect small space to keep the opera singer’s “Notes for the Role“. Note my skillful transformation from a ‘phone booth to photo booth’. Actually either structure works especially with the idea of an 18th century Théâtrophone, one of my favorite objects.

Catching an intermission at Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Placido Domingo is a rather elegant conductor, no brashness and drowning of singers by him. What a good match of conductor to opera. I like that Gounod was religious and loved Palestrina. #atelierying #davidlo #amazingarchitecture #architecture #archidaily #architect #archilife #archilovers #design #classicalmusic #opera #archisketcher #arch_more #MetOpera #orchestra #operalife #operafan #operalover #architexture #art #architecturelovers #placidodomingo

Opera can & should be listened to creatively, as a reverie, for it is suffused with nothing but nostalgia. So the best opera experience is repeated listenings in front of a humble phonograph (of any quality), and here’s my little plastic one next to some miniature toy theaters. My hand is also on the cartridge arm like a disc jockey ready to lift and repeat arias at will. That is important. When I was a teenager just getting into stereos I got sidetracked by these audiophile, purist opinions saying that you should never replay a record within 30 minutes and that after x number of times without cleaning a needle you will permanently damage a record. What a crock of bullshit. You should play your records till they’re unplayable that is exactly how one falls in love with opera, one needs ideals, not to keep an aesthetic distance. The LP getting grinded down here is Corelli & Freni & Lombard. Give me a library of worn down, unplayable opera LP sets any day of the week and endless rounds of Moka pot coffee.

Repaired my old GRD II, which has 45,000 exposures. It’s got a GV-1 on it so pictures will at least look great in my viewfinder even if I don’t capture them through the lens, which is about the same philosophy as making some eel & egg fried pot rice and going back comfortably to the world of Daido in Osaka. Please note my Ricoh collectible fan ring on the lens.

Design No. 476: Adolf Loos/Kuhner Bank Bus
atelier ying, Nyc

Claire Beck Loos’ book has been a constant source of inspiration to me. This touring bus and architectural studio has a tall, central open(ing) air space for Loos’ drawing table. The lower level has a shopping arcade (tunnel-like) for the architect and his client to pick out building materials and finishes via samples sold at a long row of vending machines. Loosian spartan details abound (utilitarian staircases, levels with different heights, and a single row of window hatches as the only ornamentation). I was reminded of Richard Neutra’s van with drawing board and Winston Churchill‘s Chartwell writing room which had characteristics of a naval ship. Loos’ story had elements of a long life journey going from project to project, waiting for Providence to provide help. Here the Greyhound bus is a metaphor for such an open ended journey where the dedicated architect works under the guidance of the heavens (figuratively, literally). Note that Kuhner was a generous Loos client in the memoirs.

Design No. 475: Agatha Christie Mooncake House
atelier ying, Nyc.

Looking at Hejduk’s Texas houses I’m reminded that Christie collected houses and the idea of eating a Chinese mooncake as a fictive mystery family reunion to the Murder on the Orient Express. So I placed the circle of the mooncake within Hejduk’s Diamond configurations and came up with a mooncake house where two walls cut the 8-sided circle into twelve, representing the two solutions Poirot gives to the assembled suspects. As Poirot retires from the case at the denouement of the novel, I thought a tea party with the cutting of a mooncake would be a symbolic resolution. Please also see my early Design No. 105, a Mooncake camera on my Flickr account.

The Johnsonian practice of reading books by their spines is indeed a worthy one. Reading from left to right (starting with two tomes on ship voyages) can anyone figure out the thematic links? Here are some highlights:
I was fortunate enough to have heard Robert Bly expound on his poetic process which is espoused here.
Papageno gets himself into trouble every time he opens his mouth.
Otto Wagner says architectural ability follows desire. Some of Bing’s key men had been wasting their talents in the wrong jobs (Fleming was this, and Nixon held similar beliefs) till Bing orchestrated his regime within the lion’s den (the Met).
Bing’s treatise is so thrilling that I have two copies of it, one for underlining and the other to dip into as my creative process.
Lastly, Johnson’s method is depicted in the Hebrides, a method Hejduk would have found architectural.

Design No. 474: Poirot’s Traveling Desk onboard The Orient Express
atelier ying, Nyc.

I have a fetish for portable writing desks of all sizes. This is a leather attaché that opens to become a lap desk to gather evidence and testimony of the suspects in Christie’s novel, Murder on the Orient Express. Note the sleeves to hold cards for each suspect, a humidor for Poirot’s cigarettes, his pens, and in particular a small hidden channel to observe how each suspect writes, with a sterling silver cap from a Faber Castell Perfect Pencil converted to become a low power telescope. The portable desk is scaled to fit the Orient Express dining car table allowing Poirot easy access to a drink and an ashtray while in use. If you read the notes on my drawing you’ll see that I have followed Poirot’s classic Order and Method.

Crafting a card game that embodies all train mysteries. Agatha Christie’s novel is the supreme class action murder. In the margins is Poirot’s portable detective’s desk, for a train dining car table (my variant on a Victorian stationery cabinet). Check out my design no. 462, and others inspired by Christie.

My current ten-book shelf. Two threads seem to course through these: Supporters of China (Nixon, and Johnson who possessed a brick from the Great Wall, and Christie’s stories feature a Pekingese) and Austrians (Lüchow being Bemelmans favorite restaurant). Design No. 473: Le Corbusier’s Photobooth
atelier ying, Venice
This built-in item for the Cabanon gives Corbusier ‘the painter’ a space to reminisce the past just by creating picture scenes on cards, like an imaginary photo-booth for an alternate universe (depicted on the cards). A two-part screen goes over his existing window to subdivide the opening and separate the worlds past & present, like an imaginary Wotan. His drawing table becomes like the table used by the Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu as a surface to shuffle cards representing scenes of life as an existentially plotless film.

Design No. 472: La Fenice’s “Royal Box Treehouse”, redesign
atelier ying, Venice
An imaginary La Fenice Opera house has a royal box that pays for itself over time. The monarch has a cockpit pilot’s seat inside the tree (or grafted onto it) and is protected by a circular rail that can sit 9 tree elves (who pay for partial view but share in the tree energy). A circulating stream is in the box front protected by a brass foot rail so that the monarch can prop his feet and which serves as a rail for an Venetian standing bar inside the box at intermission. The tree structurally supports a slightly taller royal box and divides the ground level entrance making it an organic, slightly ergonometric entry as the polished wood of the tree (only on the ground level) allows fast Opera fans to squeeze and slide by the slower ones. To be fair, standing room orchestra patrons (where I spend my life) should also get to sit under the tree and listen to opera.
Design dedicated to Joyce El-Khoury who’s Instagram post on trees inspired this.
