Design No. 417: Norma Pulpit / Parsifal Confessional
atelier ying, nyc.
Norma's solo with chorus after Casta Diva directly inspired this design. A high structure for Norma to speak from, like a bully's pulpit, with a top spike piece, for she is truly alone in her love and her self-journey in her inner turmoil is warlike and heroic, from a romantic perspective. "Ah, bello a me ritorna, ..." for although this should be a tender invocation Bellini marks the words to be sung con forza.
In Parsifal Wagner purifies both the characters of his drama as well as himself of artistic temptations, inclinations (the opposite of Bellini, whom Wagner admired). One composer's abnegation is the other composer's nostalgic rumination, in a way.
The drama is great characterizing these extremes and what an interesting pair of operas I am listening to these days, Norma and Parsifal, both have these static qualities where nothing happens and nothing much happens, it is all about internal struggles and ideals of duty. So the idea of the static yet dramatic, and the idea of propensity due to the illusion of preponderance are my cues for figuring out my conception here, like a conductor trying to sense the flow and tempi. Wagner is an architect, without a doubt. Someone should write about Wagner and the Genius Loci among his places, like Bayreuth. Who else but these two composers cared so much about the sense of atmosphere of a place? Anthony Pappano offered the long, prominent introductions in Norma as indicative for similar reasons.
