Hi Everyone! My name is Chris @cookphoto and I've been given the honor of taking over the @universetoday Instagram account for the day! Thank you Fraser Cain!
I'm a photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts specializing in landscapes, weddings and spaceflight photography but I've also been an astrophotographer since the mid 1980's.
I'll be sharing three of my favorite astrophotos with you today and this is number one.
Knowing there was going to be a partial solar eclipse visible at sunrise along the US east coast on November 3, 2013, I wanted to capture it rising behind a iconic landmark. I chose the Empire State Building in New York City. After studying satellite maps on Google Earth and calculating the point of sunrise via The Photographer's Ephemeris, I ended up at a park in North Arlington, New Jersey, 7.5 miles away. The morning of the eclipse saw clouds covering 95% of the sky. Luckily, the only clear area was where the Sun was rising! I snapped the 1/4000th sec exposure at ISO100 at 6:38am EST using a Canon 40D DSLR and Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L lens. Soon after I captured the scene, the Sun disappeared into the cloud bank seen at the top of the photo.
