M2Eet Michelle Garcia, E.I.
Michelle is a Staff Engineer at M2E Consulting Engineers, as well an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). She has been active since she joined the University branch when she attended FIU where she served in the Executive Board and now serves in the professional Miami-Dade Branch Board.
This past weekend, she attended the 2018 Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS) in Washington DC. The symposium was a leadership workshop hosted by the ASCE Committee on Younger Members (CYM) and focused on early-career professional skills development to help ASCE Younger Members succeed and lead in the workplace. “It was a spectacularly eye-opening weekend! Overall, I learned the key components of becoming a successful leader and how to use them to manage professional and personal projects.
I was able to develop my personal vision, learn ways to maximize my leadership skills and learn about leading in a multi-generational workplace. I also learned about different communication styles and how to approach them accordingly. And I learned how important feedback is for my professional and personal growth, how to accept my mistakes and strongly recover from them.
Additionally, I met with professionals from ASCE’s Government Relations and learned how to help them get Congress and State Legislatures to take action on the things that matter most to civil engineers. To top it all off, I had the opportunity to meet civil engineers from across the country and expanded my network.

I thank CYM for developing such a great conference and recommend every young engineer to attend the next one.

I also want to thank M2E for allowing me to attend the event and for supporting my professional development. I can’t wait to spread the word and utilize all the skills that I learned at the YMLS!” #ascemiamidade #michellingarcia #gom2e #proudofyou #YMLS #civilengineering

ASCE along with Broward County and the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center have launched an elementary program which is a four series concept. The library is one of two locations selected in the country to facilitate the elementary program named “Project BUILD” and funded by National Science Foundation. It’s main goal is to bring engineering aspects to an elementary level and encourage families to become familiar with every day Engineering. If you would like to participate in the remaining events in November and December contact us at Outreach@miamidade-asce.
