#TomPhillips two-sided palette sculpture (front in top photo, back in bottom photo) 'Beckett Again', on show in his retrospective exhibition 'Connected Works' @flowersgallery East until 1 July (see previous two posts for details). This work - inscribed on each side with a sentence from the closing phrase of Samuel Beckett’s 'The Unnameable' is meant to be viewed both at the entrance and the exit. It is a stoic response to the chaos and suffering of the human condition.

Three of #TomPhillips skull pieces (swipe ➡️) on show in his retrospective exhibition 'Connected Works' @flowersgallery East until 1 July (see previous post for details). A selection of treated or ornamented skulls depict the artist's interest in the decorated skulls of Oceanic and African art. The skulls on display originate from one authentic fetish skull, re-worked by Phillips and cast in bronze or plaster, and then collaged with various media. •

The first photo is 'Memories, Dreams, and Reflections: Dreams II', created with paper collage on plaster. Second photo is 'Alas', created with plaster and mud, and the third photo is 'Ozymandias', created with gilded bronze. •

Said the artist: "On one side I'm incredibly vain, on the other I'm incredibly humble. These two people fight each other. Vanity must play a part or you couldn't keep going in this job...I want to please people or give them pleasure. I always think of the delight that I hope to cause. I chuckle at things and I enjoy them."
