This morning as I was making up cards I was reflecting on where paintings are hung after they are purchased. I particularly love when paintings are bought to be placed in clinic or business/healthcare settings. All of the pieces in these photos collages are or were displayed in work spaces where women are served or cared for. I often hear from people who say 'I saw your work in xyz office, and it impacted like this....' I think it's really special when care providers understand that their walls talk, and they have the appreciation and faith that the people they see and the art they choose will interact in an intimate, natural, intuitive way, beyond their control but in a way they might not be able to offer themselves. What we see matters. We feel it and absorb it. It's even more special that these are the life- size, flesh and blood originals. There is only one of each, and they are honestly just so different from any reproduction. To my patrons, thank you for believing in this.
Lastly, when I first started this project, I was often asked, ' yes, but where would anyone hang this?' Are you kidding?! Everywhere! It's my dream to see work like mine in every hospital, birth center, antenatal or midwifery clinic.... any healthcare institution, smaller health- based business, community-care providers, the list is endless besides our own beloved homes. I have always believed: art should be with the people. Our public spaces need art, the public needs art. All kinds. Even kinds that might push ya a tiny bit out of our comfort zones. Because that's healthy y'all.
(I don't say y'all I'm Canadian but it seemed fitting)
