This magnificent wax figure was modeled off an unknown pregnant woman who was run over by a carriage just outside the Royal College of Surgeons in San Carlos in the 1700s. Her body went unclaimed, and so was anatomized by medical students at the College. It was recently on display as part of the “Arte y Carne” Exhibition at the Javier Puerta Museum in Madrid. Wax models like this were used for teaching anatomy to medical students at a time when few bodies were available for dissection. Although we don’t know her name, this woman continues to teach us centuries after her death. Wax models very much represent the merging of science and art which characterized the Enlightenment. #histmed #medicalhistory #waxmodel #arteycarne #sciart #museumobject #histsci #humananatomy #enlightenment #grossanatomy #pregnancy #historyofmedicine #believeitornot #TIL #themoreyouknow #wax #medstudent #nursingstudent #obstetrician #whitecoat #medschoollife

I posted this recently but I thought it was worth revisiting given the fact it’s Mother’s Day in the US. Today, childbirth still carries with it many risks, but it’s not nearly as dangerous as it was in the past. Incidences of childbirth fever (caused by bacterial infection) was source of many deaths in the past. I talk extensively about the dangers pregnant women faced in the grimy, germ-infested hospitals of the Victorian period in my upcoming book #TheButcheringArt, now available for pre-order in the US.
