Artist Highlight - Cui Xiuwen
As a multimedia conceptual artist, Cui experimented with a plethora of different mediums, including oil painting, scroll painting, photography, video, and performance. She accumulated numerous awards throughout her career, most notably the “Most Influential Artist of the Year” China Award in 2010. She was also the first Chinese artist to exhibit work at the Tate Modern, UK. Before she passed away on August 1, she expressed her wish to donate her possessions to create a meditation center in China. Her passing is a heavy loss, not only to the women she’s inspired but to artists and creatives everywhere. Her work shifted from figurative to minimal and abstract in her final years as she came to terms and found inner peace with her imminent mortality. May she rest in peace, knowing that she’s left the world a better place. Live with intention and gratitude! Be kind, be patient and present. Thank you Cui Xiuwen for the laughs, meals, discussion and friendship. You are no longer physically here but your kindness and spirit live on through your work and the lives you touched. We are grateful to have known you!
