"Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have mercy on me”
The prayer offered by the monks of Mt. Athos as they prepare incense for the monastery.
This week I revisited Psalm 51, a prayer of lament over the moral and spiritual failure of King David. In the Psalm he prays "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." I set out to compound an incense reminiscent of his lament, one I have shared in. -------- I call it "Miktam". I chose Hyssop and rose for their Biblical symbolism of cleansing and Christ, symbols of the only true cleansing offered us in the blood of Christ. I chose poppy seed for its symbolism of eternal rest, one only made possible for those who lament their mutiny and return to their Maker's open arms. Star Anise, a symbol of marriage union, a joyful coming home. And Frankincense, a symbol of the priestly role of Christ atoning for the mutiny of all. -------- NOTE: There is no spiritual power in incense burning. To elevate it to anything other than aromatics or symbolism is an abuse of worship for the Christian. It is simply to enjoy the aromatic qualities and health benefits of the components. The smoke is a Biblical symbol for prayer being lifted to the Lord and the sweet aroma given to fill the room in celebration of His presence.
