This was a very exciting month for zoo giraffe births. While the world was waiting for April the Giraffe to have her baby, another calf was born at Chester Zoo (video above). One of the challenges of veterinary medicine is the broad species variation that we encounter. This is exemplified in the area of reproduction, gestation, and birth. However there are some basic stages and principles that can be generalised across many species. In my reproduction class, I learned about the different stages of labour.
Stage 1 involves cervical dilation, and foetal positioning for expulsion. The mother may be restless, and urinating frequently.
Stage 2 starts with rupture of the chorioallantois and ends in delivery of the calf.
Stage 3 ends when foetal membranes are passed in their entirety (delivery of the placenta).
