A new listing, a Solomon Islands war club. This particular shape is described by Guppy who attributes the form to Florida Island, presently known as Nggela. (Henry B. Guppy; The Solomon Islands And Their Natives London, Lowrey, 1887) Such exotic and well-made clubs were popular collectables in the 19th and early 20th century Europe with big names like W. O. Oldman and M. D. Webster involved in their trade. Oldman, in catalog 91, also attributes the type to the Nggela islands. This example has a deep dark patina and good signs of age, where the wood has subtly deformed from the shape it was original cut in. Now listed for sale on my website www.mandarinmansion.com.
