Antiporno (2016) Directed By Sion Sono
The first 15 minutes of Antiporno almost had me turn it off. I didn’t know anything about it, and I found the acting awful, the plot and visual themes around sex, sexuality and pop culture absolutely horrid. But, I didn’t realize I was being set-up, Sion Sono was purposely embodying all that he sees as wrong in our current pop art world that is misogynistic, patriarchal, hyper capitalist and devoid of real expression and when he flipped it about 20 minutes in I had to acknowledge it was one of the greatest bait and switches I’ve ever experienced in cinema. I am new to Sono’s films, but if this is any indicator of his cinema I am already bought in. Taking the functions of infamous Roman Porno films Sono subverts the genre and turns it on its head, making you even question its very existence, what is liberation for marginalized groups? Can we really be liberated through consumer culture and identity based power politics that doesn’t question structural power? It’s really one of the most important works done in the last few years.
