This will be long. Bear with me. (Link to design in profile)
Last weekend I was told by someone that I “needed” to show my designs on other bodies. That I was preventing this person from picturing these designs on herself. Taller than me, thinner than me, prettier than me, I am markedly aware that this was someone who has likely seen most designs shown first on someone that looks like them.
I don’t model my own designs because I love to model. I definitely am not comfortable in front of a camera. I don’t like the feeling of being watched. BUT! It is very rare to see knitting patterns originally modelled on less conventional bodies. .
Having been involved with countless discussions, I know my patterns would sell better if shown on “average” sized people. I know I would struggle less with exposure.
But here’s the thing: there are too many others out there like me. Ones who have been told they don’t fit. That they don’t deserve clothes that fit them well. So I show my designs on this body. I design in a huge range of sizes, even when I have to bribe my tech editor with chocolate and coffee to keep her sane. ;) I put myself in a position of discomfort to comfort others. You, whoever you are, wherever you are, deserve beautiful clothing in fabric you love, that fits you well.
