#AntietamCreek runs next to the Old Carousel Picnic Pavilion in #MontAltoStatePark. This area was once a popular mountain retreat with a swimming pool, hiking trails, and a carousel (housed under the round pavilion) before it became a state park. Today, visitors can hike, fish, and picnic under the round pavilion. Mont Alto is the oldest Pennsylvania state park still in the state park system. #pastateparks#getoutdoorspa#pasunnydays
Sunday, September 17, 1862 culminated a sporadic three day battle in which 23000 soldiers were wounded or killed in battle at Sharpsburg, Maryland. Did you know Union battles are named after local creeks, hence the Battle of Antietam (Creek) versus what the Confederate's called the Battle of Sharpsburg (Maryland)? #antietamcreek#antietambattle#antietam#civilwarreenactment#civilwarreenactment
Today, we pause and remember The Battle of Antietam, fought exactly 155 years ago. Many thanks to the folks who came to the battlefield this weekend to help tell the stories of the people who lived and died here.
On this day in 1862 The Battle of Antietam was fought. This is an aerial view of the Sunken Road the Confederates held at 9am and the open ground the Union troops crossed sustaining heavy casualties. Confederate Colonel John Brown Gordon commanded 2,200 troops that were well protected in the Sunken road. When the Union army shifted their attacks here, 10,000 soldiers were directed towards the road. Gordon's men held their fire to the last possible second before opening fire. Much of the Union line collapsed. For 3 hours the sides exchanged nearly point-blank fire before the brigades of Brigadier General John C. Caldwell and Colonel John R. Brooke of the 2nd Corp broke through. When the smoke cleared, 5,500 casualties had been sustained with neither side gaining much. The Battle of Antietam would be considered a tactical draw, however the Confederate retreat was the "victory" Abraham Linncoln needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. #Antietam#1862#Sept17#antietamcreek #civilwar#americancivilwar#tacticaldraw#emancipationproclomation#maryland#antietammd#sunkenroad#history#onthisday#observationtower#antietamnationalbattlefield
