The female body is susceptible to so many sensations, pleasurable and painful and everything in between.
There could be a wide range of reasons for pain, itching, burning or discomfort in your genital area, but the most common are urinary tract infections (UTI) and yeast infections.
A UTI happens when bacteria, usually E. coli, enters your urethra (the tube that carries urine out of your body). From there, bacteria can travel up your urinary system to your bladder, where it can multiply and become a infection.
Women can get UTIs for several reasons:
- More frequent sexual intercourse (‘honeymoon cystitis’, or when trying to conceive), more rigorous sexual activity that causes irritation to the genitourinary tissues, a new sexual partner, the use of spermicides, poor hygiene practices when using sex toys/aids, use of tampons (or improper cleaning of menstrual cups), use of antibiotics (because of how these change the microbiome), pregnancy (because of effects on bladder function and the microbiome), diabetes (more sugar in the urine feeds undesirable bacteria) and more.
