Quote: Theodore Annemann
One of the greatest mentalist of his time the showman Annemann is responsible for the famous Jinx Magazine that generated some of the most ground breaking magical effects to this day.
In this quote I see “the work” of magic as an art form. For myself I try to always come as close to “real magic” as possible and that is done by stripping down everything that isn’t magical or otherwise hiding it via subterfuge.
When i design a routine I think about the magical idea I want to convey to the audience and then research the various methods others have devised to accomplish that in the magic community and also in hollywood.
I then try to ever approach the unattainable “real magic” by removing layer and layer in an attempt to create a simulation of actually having the magical ability.
In comedy the comedian’s work is dancing the line between absurd and truth and for the magician, by my estimation, dances the line between the supernatural and reality.
To much reality and you are puzzle maker, to much supernatural and your “psychic” and it is this dance where the magician resides as someone who does not break reality but bends it using what is real to highlight that which is not. That of course being our perception of reality itself.
