You may have never heard of palm oil, but chances are you’ve already consumed it today. It’s an ingredient in about half the packaged products on supermarket shelves — everything from ice cream and peanut butter to lipstick and shampoo.
This ubiquitous ingredient has been linked to the clearing of tropical forests, inspiring many organizations and individuals to call for a palm oil boycott. However, solving the problem is not aqthat simple.
Here’s the first thing you should know about palm oil: it's not all bad. Palm oil is the most effiecient oil crop, producing up to 10 times more oil per acre than soy, sunflower or rapeseed.

But we need to urgently address the negative impacts because consumption is skyrocketing.
This is where Conservation International comes in. We are working with governments, companies, communities and other organizations to help transform the industry and make palm oil more sustainable. Among other initiatives, we're working across southeast Asia, South America and Africa to provide training to producers to improve the quality and quantity of their yields and improve livelihoods, while conserving important forest areas.
