Credit to @animalwelfareworldwide : ELEPHANT MASSAGES MIGHT BE THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO ON VACATION : SHARE TO AWARE !

A video's been circulating again that shows a tourist in Thailand receiving an elephant massage — he lies in a lounge chair as two young elephants slap at his back with their trunks and pat him down with their feet.

Videos of elephant massages have been around for several years, and media outlets have touted the experience as a fun vacation activity. One Thailand elephant camp, the Mae Ping Elephant Camp, advertises that its elephants play musical instruments and soccer as well as giving lucky tourists the chance to be massaged.

Unfortunately, the truth behind elephant massages isn't nearly as attractive. Like almost all trained elephants, the animals featured in most of these tourist attractions are stolen from their mothers at a young age and subjected to brutal training procedures designed to crush their spirits.

The practice is known as a "training crush," or "elephant crush," and can involve stabbing or injuring the baby elephants, locking them in small cages and subjecting them to starvation, thirst and sleep deprivation. Sometimes they don't make it.

At the end of the experience, the orphaned elephants are left broken and dispirited — in other words, pliable enough for their trainers to tell them what to do, like making them massage tourists. Many mahouts, or trainers, will also use bullhooks to keep the performing elephants in line — sharp instruments used to jab the elephants if they misbehave.

And it's not just massages. Nearly any elephant used in tourism — including those used in elephant rides, or even U.S. circuses — have been subjected to some sort of training crush designed to make them obedient. "Tourists may think activities like riding an elephant do no harm," Dr. Jan Schmidt-Burbach, a senior wildlife and veterinary adviser at World Animal Protection, told The Dodo earlier this year. "But the brutal truth is that breaking these animals' spirits to the point that they allow humans to interact with them involves cruelty at every turn."

#PrayersforMohan @Regranned from @wildlifesos - #UpdateOnMohan
Our veterinarians and keepers have been working rigorously, putting a fresh dressing of cotton cloth, splints and bandages on Mohan's fractured limb everyday now to provide it the support it needs to heal instead of the plaster cast as it was getting loose frequently. While we ensure that he gets sufficient rest while lying down, it is also necessary that he spends time standing with the help of the support structure so as to avoid bed sores and prevent further health complications.
Mohan has been consuming around a 100 kilos of fodder and sufficient water, which is one less cause for concern at this complicated stage of his health. This treatment and monitoring shall continue for the next couple of days, following which the vets will be able to provide us with an update on his condition.
Please continue to keep Mohan in your thoughts and pray that the next update is a positive one!
Thank you so much for all your kind support, it means a lot to Mohan and our team on the field. - #regrann @anika_4_animals @elephantwatchnepal #animalwelfareworldwide

Baby mine, don't you cry.
Baby mine, dry your eyes.
Rest your head close to my heart,
Never to part, baby of mine.
Little one, when you play,
Pay no heed what they say.
Let your eyes sparkle and shine,
Never a tear, baby of mine.
If they knew all about you,
They'd end up loving you, too.
All those same people who scold you,
What they'd give just for the right to hold you.
From your hair down to your toes,
You're not much, goodness knows.
But, you're so precious to me,
Sweet as can be, baby of mine

FREE LASAH
We need to help Lasah The Elephant.
We’ll need to continue spreading the word about his plight.

Elephants like Lasah do not belong in “animal adventure parks” for the benefit of visitors. Lasah was born wild before he was caught and chain-ganged into a variety of exploitative activities from logging to elephant rides.
If he was human, you would call him a slave.
And in this day and age slavery is entirely unacceptable!!! Stay tuned to make noice and tweet for Lasah , THANK YOU !! #freelasah #elephant #LankawiElephantAdventures #animalrights

MOHAN
Unfortunately, we have some distressing news for all our supporters today: Mohan's condition has deteriorated since our last update. Although we have provided him with a support structure in his enclosure, Mohan seems to be suffering from increasing discomfort in his fractured right front limb as well as the inflamed left hind limb, and now prefers to lie down rather than bear any weight on them. We have been using our crane to provide him critical support to ensure that he is not lying on the same side for too long to avoid further health complications. Our veterinarians have Mohan on intravenous fluids and he is also being given oral re-hydration solutions as he is not able to consume sufficient fodder.
Our elephant veterinarians and caregivers are doing everything they can to get Mohan back on his feet but we feel the prognosis is grave. Mohan’s body has suffered so much abuse and trauma all these years and has taken a horrible toll on his frame.
Our team is staying by Mohan's side throughout the night.
Mohan needs your prayers now more than ever. #PrayersforMohan #Elephant #wildlifesos #animalwelfareworldwide @wildlifesos @anika_4_animals @elephantwatchnepal

Before you participate in elephant tourism, learn about the barbaric abuse called phajaan, or “the crush.” Choose an elephant sanctuary instead
http://www.thenotsoinnocentsabroad.com/blog/why-elephant-trekking-and-elephant-rides-are-evil?format=amp

The process to get elephants to obey orders involves “breaking” them — and once you learn about this barbaric, heartbreaking practice, you’ll never want to be a part of elephant tourism again.

Baby elephants are taken from their mothers and kept in small pens, where they’re beaten and starved for several weeks.

To train an elephant, it must undergo a horrific process called “the crush,” or phajaan.
Baby elephants — some still nursing — are taken from their mothers and kept in small pens or have all four legs tied up, and are beaten and starved for several weeks. The level of suffering elephants undergo is “severe,” according to World Animal Protection, which released a report about elephant tourism in 2017.

Bullhooks, long metal poles with a hook at the tip, are used to stab the elephant’s head, slash its skin and pull its ears. At an elephant show, you might notice torn ears or scarred foreheads caused during the crush.

During the crush, elephants have to be monitored because they’ll try to kill themselves by stepping on their trunk. If that doesn’t break your heart, I’d check your chest cavity — it’s probably empty. @anika_4_animals @elephantnaturepark #lekchailert #animalwelfareworldwide

We are very excited to give this update: TeamKaavan / Animal Welfare Worldwide have been diligently working with organisation
“Free the Wild “ whose Trustees are Mark Cowne, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne and CHER, who have partnered with us in order to free our boy Kaavan to the Cambodia Wild Life Sanctuary
http://www.cambodiawildlifesanctuary.org/index.html
On 19 September we have arranged a high level meeting in Pakistan with those in charge of Islamabad Zoo administration to discuss retiring Kaavan and how to help the other animals at the zoo.
We know we can all bring a change, everyone’s amazing dedicated actions and tireless efforts sharing his story, signing petitions, tweeting, emailing and NOT staying silent have proved this and without all of you none of this would be possible, it is humbling to be a part of and has kept us going to Free Kaavan.
We will update everyone every step of the way.

The Islamabad Zoo is planning to bring 1 or 2 of these stolen babies to live with or replace our beautiful boy Kaavan. So now we have on our shoulders to save 3 lives not just 1.

But make no mistake when we stand together everything is possible and we will get this stopped!

33 baby elephants were stolen from the wild (illegally captured) from the wild after killing their mothers. After fighting court cases and getting back 33 babies, the Government now wants to legalise elephant trafficking by giving back the elephants to their false owners. These ‘owners’ include ego driven temple chiefs, Buddhist monks, politicians and nouveau riche who are able to bribe even court officials and buy their influence.
The reason being given is for the parades or pereheras which are supposedly traditions that have to be maintained even though the basic and foremost teachings of Lord Buddha are being disrespected and ignored – that is Metta or Loving Kindness to All Beings. In actual fact they are commercially driven pageants for Tourism. The temples keep elephants for the same reason.
The Colombo Courts is including another 15 baby elephants on the 23rd August to take part in the next parade although they originally said the elephants would only be released for the Kandy Perehera. The torture to these babies for traditional Buddhist parades is ironic to say the least. We voted this Government in hoping that they would not bow down to corruption but they have proved that they are as corrupt and cruel as their predecessors.
How can Sri Lanka host the next CITES conference when the Government is legitimising illegal trade in elephants? Please write to the CITES Secretary General Mr. John E Scanlon at

NEVER RIDE an 🐘😖😩😡⛓⛏Whether they are born in captivity or taken from the wild, elephants must be emotionally and mentally broken before they would allow people to climb onto their backs,” she says. “Baby elephants are taken from their frantic mothers so that their spirit can be broken and they won’t develop a sense of independence. Handlers use force and domination to keep elephants afraid and submissive. They’re repeatedly hit with bullhooks and they learn to obey commands or face the painful consequences.” Travelers’ shouldn’t be fooled by places that present themselves as sanctuaries as well. “True elephant sanctuaries—which provide lifetime care centered on putting the animals’ social, psychological, and physical needs first—do not allow public contact or any other interaction that would disrupt the elephants’. #dontrideanelephant #elephant #bullhook #submissive #animalcruelty #tourism #sanctuary #animals #animalwelfareworldwide #travel @animalwelfareworldwide
