TRUNKS UP ... for our one-year anniversary! 🐘
🌸 Last August 12 (#WorldElephantDay) we launched „Elephants in Japan: In Memory of Hanako“ to help solitary captive elephants in Japan. ➡ The campaign was created in honor of Hanako, the 69-year-old elephant who was forced to spend her life totally alone, in a small, barren concrete enclosure in a Tokyo zoo.
It’s been an eventful first year:
• The Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) made an official statement acknowledging that elephants are “highly social animals” and that they will promote moving solitary elephants into groups.
• Hanako’s zoo announced they will shut down their elephant exhibit - permanently! • Yuki Park Zoo is making welfare improvements for Teru and have announced they will no
longer exhibit elephants after Teru.
• Our petition for Miyako was delivered to targets - with a whopping quarter of a million signatures! • Our petition for Sunny has a staggering 360,000+ signatures.
• Our brand new elephant mascot “Bochi,” will help us educate people about elephant welfare in Japan and elsewhere.
❤🐘HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, and thank YOU for supporting us throughout this journey so far. We are helping drive change for Japan’s lonely elephants! There is still a lot to be done, but we are still only getting started!
