As some of you may remember, things didn't exactly go as planned for our recent trip to Bahamas. Now that we have gone, here is my #hotelreview & some #traveltips.
When booking a trip, do NOT book through the hotel. This created alot of the issues when the flights were cancelled & we were trying to find a solution. If we'd booked through WestJet, they would have taken accountability for the hotel.
Further, I have a travel visa with insurance so we declined the hotels. What I learned later is that your travel companion can only be your spouse or children. Even though the cancellation should have resulted in a full refund, we could only get half because I was going with a friend. Because of this, we rebooked with the credit we got from #AtlantisBahamas.
We were supposed to stay at Reef but now having been, I'm glad we rebooked at Royal. It's the most central & has an abundance of restaurants. When we rebooked, Reef spiked in cost. Royal kept us within the credit & came with $400 for food/bev.
I'm sure we could've kept our food costs down, but going to some of the nice restaurants was part of the experience. With everything in US dollars, it's extra expensive for us Canadians however. A yogurt parfait was $8 US & the average alcoholic drink is $12-15 US+. Even with $400 in credits, we spent $1,200 Canadian on food. On top of the of hotel/flight, this adds up.
The hotel grounds, especially the lobby at The Royal, is majestic. I can see why it's so popular. We also loved the waterpark in addition to the beach & pools.
While the aquarium is stunning, I felt bad for the huge manta rays. Its way too small for them. What I felt worse about however is dolphin cay. I thought the dolphins may have been in a sea pen, but it's a small manmade exclosure. They say they were rescued during Hurricane Katrina but if they are rehabilitated, why haven't they been released? They also promote tons of experiences with them so they are a huge money maker for the resort.
It was warm but cloudy our entire time in Nassau so our sunny day in Exuma was a highlight. If I ever go back, I'll be heading there. It was great to see #ParadiseIsland once but Exuma was more my speed 🌴.
