Today, I want to share a lesson about how to offer assistance to your differently abled friends. Ready?
Say something like this: "Friend, do you need help or do you have this?" If Friend says help is needed, jump right in. If Friend says no thanks, let Friend do whatever it is.
Except opening doors. Always open doors for people.
Otherwise, you're going to make Friend feel different and bad and sad, and Friend might not want to be your friend anymore and Friend might stop playing with you.
Because Friend might be able to walk 21 miles in one day, hike big mountains, hop down the street in platform wedges, run 3 miles in the morning, and do other cool stuff that Friend wouldn't have had the chance to do if Friend accepted "help" from people who told her she wouldn't walk again.
