I rarely post anything political or controversial and have lots of cute pictures of my puppy, bunny and husband... but this struck a nerve so bear with me or keep scrolling.

I CHOSE TO BE A NURSE, NOT A PHYSICIAN. When people say “you’re so smart, you should have gone to medical school” it makes me sick. I’m in the job to hold my patient’s hand when they are in pain, sit with a crying family member, celebrate a discharge home they never thought would happen, and be present for a beautiful and peaceful death after a long battle. The best physicians I have ever met are the ones that listen to their nurses. A nurse colleague the other day saved a woman’s life by noting early stages of a perforated bowel. We are their eyes and ears. Without nurses, doctors couldn’t do their jobs. We work with patients together and in different ways. I appreciate doctors for all that they do because I would never want to be one, but each of them earn my respect, they aren’t entitled to it. And Dr. Glener, YOU DON’T HAVE MY RESPECT. 😤.

American Nurses Association (ANA) defines a healthy nurse as one who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional wellbeing. A healthy nurse lives life to the fullest capacity, across the wellness/illness continuum, as they become stronger role models, advocates, and educators, personally, for their families, their communities and work environments, and ultimately for their patients. Nurses at 3.6 million strong and the most trusted profession, have the power to make a difference! To all my nursing colleagues, please look to execute Healthy Nurses Healthy Nation Initiative at your organization! ✨✨✨(swipe ⬅️) The #NationalAssociationOfColoredGraduateNurses (#NACGN) was founded in 1908. The organization was founded because the #AmericanNursesAssociation refused to admit black members even though the organization was open to black members. The NACGN had three main goals: to advance the standards and best interests of trained nurses, to break down discrimination in the nursing profession, and to develop leadership within the ranks of black nurses.” Through NACGN, a national jobs registry was created to help #BlackNurses find employment. Through its leadership, NACGN campaigned for the #AmericanRedCross to admit black nurses since it was the only path to the #UnitedStatedArmyNurseCorps (#USANC). Though the Red Cross was open to admitting black nurses, however, the #SurgeonGeneral wasn’t until the 1918 flu pandemic which resulted in a shortage of nurses…thus forcing integration. During #WorldWarII, the #WarDepartment stated that no black nurses would be assigned to serve in the USANC. Through negotiations, the NACGN was able to convince the USANC to accept a quota of 56 black nurses to work at #BlackMilitaryInstallations. Through tireless efforts, by 1943, the NACGN was able to increase the number of black nurses with the USANC from 56 to 160. By1943, the War Department drafted all qualified nurses, regardless of race. In 1949, the NACGN voted to accept a merger with the American Nurses Association, resulting in the dissolution of the NACGN. One of the NACGN’s most notable members is #MaryElizaMahoney, the #FistBlackPerson to receive a nursing degree. Mahoney was one of the few blacks accepted into the American Nurses Association and is a co-founder of NACGN. Salute to you ladies for paving a way for future generations. Your contributions to the field will never be forgotten. We honor and thank you!
