Regrann from @vilmadobilaite - Part of jazz is the illusion of spontaneity and Monk played the piano as though he’d never seen one before. Came at it from all angles, using his elbows, taking chops at it, rippling through the keys like they were a deck of cards, fingers jabbing at them like they were hot to the touch or tottering around them like a woman in heels- playing it all wrong as far as classical piano went … -Geoff Dyer “But Beautiful”

Through improvisation, jazz teaches you about yourself. And through swing, it teaches you that other people are individuals too. It teaches you how to coordinate with them… -Wynton Marsalis

Tireless and inspiring educator, brilliant composer, great band leader, multi-Grammy Award winner Wynton Marsalis has been described as the most outstanding jazz musician and trumpeter of his generation and one of the world’s top classical trumpeters.

Coleman Hawkins -the first important tenor saxophonist in jazz, sometimes called the "father of the tenor sax”- remained incredibly inventive and creative during his long career and always was seeking new challenges. He directly influenced many bebop performers, but at the same time, Hawkins also remained open to the influence of others, including the much younger musicians he associated with later in life.
"It was Hawk who made the tenor into jazz instrument, defined the way it had to sound: big-bellied, full-throated, huge…" - wrote Geoff Dyer in his book "But Beautiful". #ColemanHawkins #hawk #jazz #bebop #sax #tenorsax #inventive #creativity #fatherofthetenorsax

Repost from @vilmadobilaite - Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that's easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity. - Charles Mingus

A deadline was his inspiration, never having enough time was his muse. Some of the best pieces had been written when he was hurtling toward a deadline like someone rushing to catch a plane. “Moon Indigo” took fifteen minutes while his mother finished cooking dinner; “Black and Tan Fantasy” had to come to him in a couple of minutes in the back of the taxi on his way to the studio after a all-night drinking session. “Solitude” took all of twenty minutes, scribbled standing up at the studio when he found he was a song short… Yeah, there was nothing to worry about, he had a plenty of time ...
