The month of May is ALS awareness month. Recently, my rock, my best friend, my biggest supporter... my mom was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a motor neuron disease that can affect anyone. Never in a million years though did I expect something like this to impact someone so close to me. This post is to help raise awareness of ALS and to possibly raise support to help find a cure for it.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. ALS attacks certain cells in the brain and the spinal cord needed to keep our muscles moving. People with ALS only live 2-5 years after their first signs of disease. Early signs and symptoms of a ALS include muscle cramps and twitching, weakness in the extremities and difficulty speaking or swallowing. Eventually, it leads to the inability to move any part of your body, to speak or communicate with anything but your eyes, and will stop you from being able to breath on your own. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this disease.
My mom has been very strong throughout this process. She is still the rock of this family and makes sure we don't lose faith even in situations such as this. A common phrase that can be heard is "Faith > fear." We cannot let our faith be overcome by any fear that we may have for the future. We need to trust God and have FAITH that He has a plan for my mom to do wonderful things and reach many people while she is still with us.
One of the biggest ways that you can support is by donating money the ALS foundation. Your donations with help provide them with resources to continue to look for a cure for ALS. If you would like me to send you the link to donate just let me know. Thank you for your support!
