The word cemetery has Greek origins meaning “sleeping place.” Graveyard is often used interchangeably with cemetery, but primarily refers to a burial ground within a churchyard. #southernreverie

Africatown (also known as Plateau and Africa Town, USA) is another historic district in Mobile, Alabama and is designated as a site on Mobile’s African American Heritage Trail. Together with 115 other slaves, Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis was brought illegally to the United States on board the ship Clotilda and arrived in Mobile Bay in 1860. At the end of the Civil War, these individuals tried to raise money to return to their homeland but were not able to. Africatown developed as their community. Lewis loved and was married to another Clotilda survivor, Abile, until her death in 1905. They had six children. Lewis died in Africatown in 1935. Thanks to @alabama.architecture ❤️ for this excellent suggestion on an important piece of Mobile’s history. #southernreverie
