⏳Can we turn back time and reverse the skin’s ageing process? There are only a handful of topical ingredients that are shown through properly conducted clinical studies to reverse the signs of skin ageing. Over the next few days I’ll be highlighting these ingredients - the first of which is Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs). These include Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic, Citric, Malic and Tartaric acids. ⌛️AHAs work to exfoliate and have been found to improve skin wrinkling, elasticity and texture by reversing some of the processes seen in ageing skin. Removal of the outermost skin cells stimulates the cells below to grow and divide, causing the skin to thicken and thus diminishing visible signs of ageing. The more frequently you exfoliate, the more cell divisions will occur in the lower skin layers. Moderate exfoliation increases cell division mostly in the epidermis (the outer layer), which has a good ability to replicate cells. However, exfoliating ‘extravagantly’ can chronically damage the epidermis and also cause inflammation further below in the dermis (where wrinkles form) - no thanks! ⏳It’s important to start AHA use slowly and gently and to be aware of how your skin is responding. AHAs are effective for skin rejuvenation at 8% and above and should be at a ph of less than 4. This great product from Stratia Skin contains 10% mandelic acid with a ph of 3.4. It’s affordable, gentle and effective!
