Building on the previous post, I wanted to reflect on how difficult this journey has been. While many of my classmates worry about debt because they had the privilege of obtaining federal financial aid to pay tuition, I had a different cross to bear during law school. I worked fulltime my first year and multiple jobs my second and third year just to pay my law school tuition. In the grand scheme of things, I have been fortunate to have been selected for scholarships and fellowships that helped put a dent in my tuition payments. However, at the end of the semester, if I had not managed to zero out my bursar account balance, I could not register for the next semester. I remember there were times I had no idea how I would come up with the obscene monthly payments... And every semester I found myself scanning readings from books on reserve because I couldn't afford the textbooks. I knew I couldn't stress my little mama, a humble immigrant struggling to make ends meet. She was so proud I was in law school that there was no way I would let her down. All I could do was take it one day at a time and strategize on how to continue paying tuition, all while studying, mainting a decent GPA, fulfilling Law Review responsibilities, and being involved because we're told "employers care about [those] things." I will not deny that many people have contributed to my journey, both financially and emotionally, but, today, today l will take credit for surviving this epic journey and putting in the work, the sleepless nights, and overcoming the emotional trauma of a system not made for me and my community. So close to the finish line and I cannot believe I made it... in shattered pieces and with my altruistic views shattered, but I'm ready to put myself together to keep advocating for my people. One of the greatest satisfactions is showing my mama that all her sacrifices were worth it. 25 years old and Mamá still knows best. Today's #graduationcountdown picture is dedicated to the fearless, never-take-no-for-an-answer woman, and original DREAMer who helped me become the woman I am today: Mamá. I am forever grateful you dared to dream great dreams for me and that you crossed borders to make them happen. I love you, mi bombón asesino. ❤

😍 25 days til graduation... but technically only 1 week of classes, clinic, and closing cases, followed by 7 business days of finals.
