Back to school PSA from the mom of a nut allergy kid! I get lots of questions about this so here you go! There are LOTS of super good peanut butter alternatives for school lunches now and I promise - they taste great. -
TRY: Sunbutter (Target/Walmart/HyVee), Wow Butter (Target), Trader Joe’s Sunflower Seed Butter (tastes just like Sun Butter but less expensive), Sneaky Chef No-Nut Butter (Target).
NOT SAFE: Nutella, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, granola bars with nuts.
If you make a sandwich for your kids using Sunbutter or Wow Butter without telling them it’s different, they most likely won’t even notice. Seriously. (Lotus used to eat peanut butter daily ... when we switched to Sunbutter, I made her a sandwich with it and she loved it and had no idea it wasn’t peanut butter. And she’s a super picky eater. Now our whole family eats Sunbutter almost every day. It’s delicious and we barely miss the peanut butter.) I know it’s inconvenient and I realize I’m probably being annoying. But making this small change in your packed lunches could make a huge difference to a child in your kid’s school who has a life-threatening nut allergy.
An anaphylactic reaction for kids who are allergic to nuts can cause them to stop breathing, and it happens FAST. It’s an awful reality we have to think about each day when we send Bowie to school.
Packing Sunbutter sandwiches in your kids’ lunchboxes and sticking to the school treat/snack policy really helps ease our minds. ❤️ #nutallergy #allergymom
